I recently experienced terrible customer service at this location, involving racial profiling and discrimination.
I accompanied my girlfriend (who is Puerto Rican) to this post office for an appointment she had scheduled online to get a new passport (this post office has the worst website I have ever bore witness too by the way; the scheduling process was terrible to navigate). Once we arrived, we were met by an employee named Becky to begin the process. After presenting her birth certificate and the correct paperwork, Becky pointed out some information that was still in need of filling out. She pointed at the blank space labeled “parent’s birthplace” and said “You can just put Mexico here”. Neither my girlfriend nor myself ever said anything about Mexico, and obviously, the paperwork nor the birth certificate had anything to do with Mexico. It was racial profiling in its purest form.
Things proceeded downhill from here; after finishing up the paperwork, my girlfriend was asked to produce a valid photo ID. According to Travel.State.Gov, a primary valid photo ID may be many things; the option at the top of the list being a previous passport, valid or expired. Naturally, she brought along her recently expired passport to serve as the primary photo ID. However, upon seeing this passport, Becky denied again and again to accept it. We received incredibly rude treatment, including condescending comments and cold gestures. Only when we called Travel.State.Gov to confirm this was a valid form of ID, and present the information to this employee, did they finally comply to grant us service.
The cherry on top is that we were redirected to another employee to take care of the photo process/payment. This employee had overheard the commotion, and had asked us “did you initially not have your expired passport book?” We responded “No, we had it initially.” They were surprised - clearly, this employee knew that it was an acceptable form of ID. Given that Becky was older, appeared to be a more veteran employee, and has assisted several people with passports before, it is beyond speculation to assume that my girlfriend was denied service for no more than racial discrimination.
If anyone has the misfortune of running into Becky at this location, be sure to come prepared for a cold heart and a racist demeanor.
