  I've been a customer at REI for about a decade now. I don't pretend I'm some fantastic customer that's keeping 85 people employed with the amount of money I spend. I'm a sale shopper so I'm pretty much the least important customer that they have. With that being said, the reason I choose REI when I am shopping is because up until today I thought they have an absolutely wonderful return policy. I did not realize that there was an $8 fee to do the return or that I would have to drive it over an hour to the store which would cost me just as much in gas. With that being said I can find anything that I can buy at REI on the internet for the same price or less and since I'm a sale shopper I never get the points that add up to rewards anyways. A year to return something doesn't mean a damn thing if it's going to cost me to return that thing. I can order from Amazon or Walmart and not have to pay any return fees ever. If your business model is not working out for you and you cannot provide a level of customer service that you imply you will provide when people sign up to your lifetime membership, you need to reevaluate how you're delivering your end. I will most likely never purchase anything from REI again.

  Rei is holding $152,56 of my paypal money captive by not releasing it. I've logged a query with them, and their operators can't help me. Now I have to wait a year before it automatically gets release by paypal. This frustrates me so much! No intelligent support service from REI.COM

  The membership isn’t worth the junk mail they send you. You can get better deals through the manufacturers websites than dealing with rei. I had a tent fail after 2 uses and rei was no help getting it fixed or replaced. The manufacturer sent me a new tent after contacting them.

  REI is really dialing up the aggression on pushing membership. Despite decline interest twice it appears corporate policy dictates ‘the pitch must go on’. Please stop this practice that dehumanizes employees and puts them at odds with customers. REI is already amazons show room, you’re heading the way of Best Buy at this rate.
