My elderly mother has had nothing but grief trying to deal with the hateful postmaster at this location. I work in Mt. Airy, NC and commute to Haysi frequently to help take care of mom. From the first time I ever met the new postmaster at Haysi, he was complaining about how it wasn’t his job to deliver the mail (huh?) as he handed me a small box, then he insulted me and one of my vehicles before driving away. So, needless to say I wasn’t impressed with him or his lack of work ethic right out of the gate. Still, I kept my thoughts to myself.
Not long after, he starts complaining about the condition of mom’s driveway. Then he steps up his game and cuts her parcel service off with no notice or explanation. When she asks him why, the postmaster says it’s because somebody might get a scratch on their delivery vehicle from vegetation. She has the shrubs pruned. He still shuts her down.
Later, after thousands of dollars of repairs are done on the road, he makes up new excuses why her parcel service is still cut off. Keep in mind during the time her parcel service with the post office has been shut down, UPS, FedEx, Lowe’s, natural gas services, tandem delivery trucks (the big ones) and Appalachian Aggregates have all been making deliveries to her address with absolutely no issues or complaints.
I confronted the postmaster one day about his decision to cut off her parcel service and he informed me he was lord and master of several podunk post offices and nobody could challenge his almighty authority. (Imagine if he had any real authority over people what he’d be like). No compassion for the problems he was causing mom, nor the expense to improve her driveway - which was already quite passable before the dude with the bowl haircut and an attitude came along.
I am in Mt. Airy and on the road to California and the West Coast a lot, and work so much I often don’t even have time to go to the store or go grocery shopping which is why I have deliveries made to her address. She also has medicine and other care items delivered, and it runs her to death chasing the post office when I’ve watched all our neighbors get packages brought to their door. At this point I’d be willing to pay extra for more professional delivery services with better management, but USPS is what some companies exclusively use.
As a million mile safe truck driver and father of an Army veteran, my family knows what hard work is, and to hear this guy whine about his job and the condition of mom’s road was frankly nauseating. I take a semi truck and 53 foot trailer to farms on the West Coast that have roads in far worse shape. Muddy, dusty, ruts the size of craters. Every week I do this to bring food back to this area. But this guy can’t make it up a gravel driveway in a Jeep. Umm, ok.
We have never made a complaint about mail service in 40+ years before this postmaster came along. But, the truth of how he’s treating people in this community needs to be heard. I’ve attached a picture of my mom’s driveway to illustrate it is in very good condition.

Very nice workers and that's hard to find at a post office. Easy to get in and out and easy to find.
