I am writing this review for my husband Ricky Ours. He visited the Keyser Post Office this morning(6/17/26), to ask about our mail, which hadn’t been delivered or picked up from our rural box, for most of, if not all of two weeks. We mailed a bill a week ago, and it was still in our box, with the flag up, on 6/15/26, so we mailed it from the New Creek, WV Post Office.
He went to the window where he interacted with a female with short cropped. He didn’t get a name or any information as to her identity. He inquired after our mail and I do not know what exactly he said, but the female responded, per his accounting of the interaction, with the following(quoting him):
“I told her we hadn’t received mail for 2 weeks. She told me there was “no way that was possible”(PO Employee), and “you people up there act like not getting your mail is a life or death situation”.
She then said she’d check in the back. When she returned, she said, “your mail was delivered between 8 and 10 last night.”
Herein lies the problem. First, she shouldn’t have interacted with him in that manner, it was very unprofessional. Secondly, it very well could have been a life or death manner for some, the elderly in particular, who receive medication by mail! Third, people pay late fees on bills that aren’t received within a specified time frame. That can have a negative impact on credit ratings. What about legal notices. Sometimes a failure to appear or respond, in a timely fashion, can have negative repercussions.
The bottom line is this:
The situation was not handled in an appropriate manner, by the Management of Postal Facility Involved! Notification should have been made, by news, radio or a note in a mailbox.
By bidding out the service to private contractors, who often live out of state, and hire local carriers to deliver the mail—the carriers work for less money, they don’t have the benefits that our carriers used to have, and the Contractors who hire them don’t consider the ramifications of and emergency situation, like the one in our situation. Therefore, they don’t have approved and trained back-up or temporary coverage, ready to continue the postal service within a Reasonable Amount of Time, of the Emergency Situation that created a lapse in delivery.
This situation is not the fault of the carrier and their family should not be responsible for coverage! They are only responsible for letting the Contractor(their employer), know about the situation. That Contractor is then responsible for restoring delivery service and/or making Postal Facility Management aware of the situation.
This creates two more issues. 1. Who is ultimately responsible for the lapse in service? 2. WHO does the customer contact about it? 3. How do customers contact the responsible party?
It is a clumsy process for sure. The answer is simple. The U.S.P.S. Should Employ Carriers! Not a Contractor who submits the lowest bid and deepest even live in state!
