I am filing a formal complaint regarding the Baileys Harbor Post Office.
I ordered a large item from Amazon. Before ordering, I was specifically told the item could not be shipped to a P.O. Box, so I had it shipped to a residential address. Amazon did not disclose which carrier would ultimately handle final delivery.
The delivery could not be accepted at the residential address, and the package was sent to the Baileys Harbor Post Office for pickup. According to tracking, it sat there for approximately two hours before being returned to the sender.
I was not contacted. I was not given a reasonable opportunity to pick it up. I live and work in Door County and work 11-hour days, so returning a package after such a short window is completely unreasonable.
When I called the Baileys Harbor Post Office to ask what happened, the employee I spoke with was dismissive and unhelpful. Rather than explaining the situation professionally or offering any guidance on how to prevent this from happening again, he told me the post office was not responsible for who shipped it and was not responsible for holding the package. His tone was smug and unapologetic, and the conversation made it clear that customer inconvenience was not a concern.
This was not a minor issue. The package had already reached my local post office, yet it was returned almost immediately without notification or a realistic pickup window. Then, when I called for an explanation, I was treated like the problem was my fault for ordering an item online.
I am requesting that USPS review how this package was handled, why it was returned so quickly, and why no notice or pickup opportunity was provided. I am also requesting that customer-facing staff at this location be reminded that explaining policy does not excuse rude or dismissive service.
