UPS has evolved into a very specific kind of corporate creature — the kind that makes $5.57 billion in annual profit yet behaves like it’s running a roadside lemonade stand and needs to charge you for every lemon, napkin, and glance in the general direction of its counter.
I walked in with a digital shipping label, the kind of thing every modern device can handle effortlessly. My phone can unlock my car, pay for groceries, and translate conversations in real time, but UPS? UPS still can’t scan a digital label in 2026. They made me email it to them like we’re all still living in the era of flip phones and dial‑up modems.
Then came the moment that deserves a place in the Smithsonian.
The employee walked over, made three clicks, printed one sheet of paper, and charged me $3.00 for the privilege of watching them use their own computer. The entire “service” took eight seconds. If you scale that out, UPS effectively values those clicks at $1,350 per hour; a rate usually reserved for celebrity attorneys, neurosurgeons, and people who get paid to whisper stock tips to billionaires.
And the paper? A single sheet of low‑grade printer paper with about 10% ink coverage. The actual cost of that sheet is around 4.5 cents, yet UPS charges 25 cents for it; a 456% markup. They’re selling paper like it’s a luxury import smuggled out of a secret forest guarded by monks.
This is a company already being paid to ship the item, with profit baked right in. A company that receives tariff refunds they swear they pass on; though those refunds seem to disappear into the same void where customer service went. Yet somehow, they still need to squeeze quarters out of people returning defective merchandise.
And here’s the part that actually stings:
Imagine the family who doesn’t have a printer. They get a broken item; now they have to drive across town, burn gas, lose time, and then get slapped with UPS’s “three clicks cost extra” surcharge. It’s not customer service; it’s a corporate scavenger hunt where the prize is paying more than you should.
UPS has turned basic customer service into a monetized obstacle course.
Every step is a fee.
Every interaction is a toll booth.
Every click is a microtransaction.
At this point, I’m genuinely shocked they didn’t charge me a “breathing UPS air” surcharge or a “standing within 10 feet of the counter” fee.
Where do the grifts stop?
At what point does a company making billions decide it doesn’t need to shake quarters out of people returning defective merchandise?
UPS isn’t just flexing capitalism; it’s doing CrossFit, powerlifting, and Olympic deadlifts with it. And the customers are the ones spotting the weight.
If this is the future of customer service, the apocalypse won’t be caused by robots; it’ll be caused by corporations charging $3 for three clicks.
