Frequently Asked Questions About Scenic City Signs
What size should my sign be?
Sign sizes vary based on their purpose and location. Parking space signs are typically 12 by 18 inches, while realtor signs are usually 24 by 8 inches. Roadside signs are larger, often starting at 4 feet by 8 feet. Building signage dimensions can exceed these sizes, depending on visibility requirements and location specifics.
What signage materials do you use?
At Scenic City Signs, we utilize Coroplast for yard signs due to its durability and lightweight nature. For more permanent signage solutions, we employ composite materials such as ACM-Aluminum Composite Material. These materials offer a cost-effective and rigid option that performs exceptionally well in outdoor environments.
How long will my sign take to complete?
Completion times for signs vary depending on the type. Standard orders are typically ready within 5 to 7 business days. Routed and ADA signs may require 10 to 15 business days. Electric signs and channel letters have a longer lead time, generally 4 to 6 weeks from approval to installation.
Can I see a preview of my sign?
Yes, we provide digital proofs for all projects requiring approval. We will send renderings to ensure you can visualize the final product before we begin production.
Can I install the sign myself?
Self-installation is possible for smaller decals and wall signs. However, for larger or electrical signage, professional installation is recommended to ensure safety and proper execution.
Do I need a sign permit?
In most cases, unless you're offering real estate for sale or considering a temporary banner, the answer is yes. But every municipality, county, and situation is a little different. We're happy to handle permit applications for you, though!
Why are some signs hard to read?
Contrast - Or the lack of it! Even big letters are hard to read if there's not enough contrast between the text and the background. Those nice medium blue colors in your logo look great on the screen, but they might be hard to read on the beige building you just leased. Or the bold letters of your company name really stand out as channel letters, but the black trim and sides of the letters make the dark colors and shadows all blend together.
We're big on contrast, and we're happy to make recommendations about how to accommodate your brand guide, your landlord, and the human eyeball to make everyone happy.
Do I need to wrap my vehicle?
We get it, there are some SLICK looking wraps out there, and if it's the right solution for you, we're happy to do it. But they're not for everybody. It's a several thousand dollar investment in design, production, and installation. And don't forget removal, when you sell or dispose of the vehicle. If you're just starting out, let's talk. We're experts at dressing up simple designs to make professional looking fleet graphics that set the right tone for your brand. We'll pick the methods that are right for you and your budget. We don't just want to do your first van, we want to do your next dozen!
I had ChatGPT design the sign, can I just send it to you?
In most cases, we can work with the output of ChatGPT as a starting concept. But, in almost every situation, we will need to re-create some or all of the layout. Go ahead and send us the idea, but understand: it's basically a sketch. Useful for getting you and our designers on the same page, but probably not a finished file ready for production.
Raster graphics? Vector graphics? I am confused.
You and everyone else, it's alright! Think of raster graphics like a grid of dots. When you make the dots bigger, the picture gets bigger, but then you start seeing the edges of the dots. That's why photos look "jaggy" or "pixelated" when you blow them up too big. PNG, JPG, HEIC, BMP are all raster files. Great for photos, bad for cutting shapes in real-world objects.
Vector graphics are math. A vector file describes the lines, contours, and colors of logos and text. Because it's math, they can be scaled to any usable size without issue. They're not great for pictures, but they are exactly what we need to make cut vinyl, contour cut letters, channel letters, or anything where the line has to be clearly defined. AI, EPS, and SVG are all vector files.
PDF's are just a wrapper. You can put raster or vector information in it, and that's a good thing! But you can't "convert to a vector file" by saving your JPG as a PDF. That would be like wrapping a Werther's Original in a Reese's Cup wrapper. Sure, it says Reese's, but you're going to get a chipped tooth if you bite into it too hard!
