I came to this USPS location today to complete my Change of Address verification. The clerk, a bald white male employee, asked me to provide proof of my old address in addition to my driver’s license. I asked whether a utility bill would be acceptable, but he repeatedly said he did not understand what I was talking about and showed clear impatience. As an Asian customer living in the U.S., I understand that I have an accent, but my English was absolutely clear enough to be understood. I completed my graduate school in the U.S. and have worked professionally in this country for several years, so being repeatedly told that he “didn’t understand” a simple phrase like “utility bill” felt unreasonable and dismissive. I repeated “utility bill” several times, and even the woman waiting behind me, who was also an American customer, noticed the situation and had to raise her voice to repeat “utility bill” for me. Only then did he respond that it had to be a paper copy. When I started trying to find my electric bill on my phone, he immediately told me to step aside so he could help the person behind me. I understand that customers should not hold up the line unnecessarily, but I have been to USPS many times and have often waited while customers ahead of me needed extra time for complicated issues. Given his attitude from the beginning, this made me feel singled out and discriminated against. This was an extremely uncomfortable and humiliating experience. USPS employees should treat all customers with basic patience, professionalism, and respect, regardless of accent, race, or background. I strongly urge USPS management to review this employee’s conduct and provide proper customer service and anti-discrimination training.
