If your company uses Equitable for short term disability I strongly advise to let your employer know that they may want to look into changing companies!!! Here is why….. I’ve had one of the most frustrating experiences with Equitable Short Term Disability. I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for a payment, and still nothing. Every single week I call, I’m told the exact same thing: “Your claim is pending” or “It’s in the final stages.” Yet nothing ever changes. To make matters even worse, I’m already back at work and I’m still waiting on benefits for the time I was out. The bills don’t stop just because a claim is “pending.” After finally sending a strongly worded email to customer service, I got a phone call. I spent 47 minutes on the phone, including 10 minutes speaking with a supervisor. Unfortunately, I was told the same thing I’ve been hearing for weeks. He said he was going to “expedite” my claim to a claims examiner—a promise I’ve already heard before. At this point, “we’re expediting it” feels like a scripted response instead of an actual solution. Six weeks of waiting, countless phone calls, and no payment is completely unacceptable. People depend on these benefits while they’re unable to work, and by the time mine is processed, I’ve already returned to work. Has anyone else dealt with Equitable Short Term Disability? If so, what did you have to do to finally get your claim resolved?

This has been, without a doubt, the worst claims experience I have ever had. I went over a month without receiving any payments. When I finally got paid, the payments came all at once. Then I went another month without receiving another payment. Going that long without income caused me to fall behind on bills and created an incredible amount of financial stress. I called over and over again, left messages, sent emails, and repeatedly asked for updates. I was constantly told someone would call me back, but those callbacks often never happened. I asked to speak with supervisors multiple times, and even after being told my claim had been escalated, nothing changed. My assigned case manager, Dani, rarely responded to my calls or emails despite my repeated attempts to reach her. When I finally spoke with a supervisor, I was told the claim examiners were backlogged and that my claim was “high priority.” That explanation did not help me pay my bills or tell me when I would actually receive my money. From my experience, I felt like no one truly understood the financial hardship these delays caused. If your employees are depending on these benefits to pay their bills, they deserve timely communication and timely payments. If you’re an employer considering Equitable to administer your leave benefits, I would strongly encourage you to think carefully about the experience your employees may have if they encounter repeated delays like I did.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with Equitable Short-Term Disability has been incredibly frustrating. I was told a payment check was issued on June 4, yet 15 days later I still have not received any payment. During that time, I called multiple times and received different answers from different representatives. One person told me a check had been mailed. Another told me no check had been issued and helped me set up direct deposit. Later, I was told the direct deposit would only apply to future payments and that I should continue waiting for a check. After waiting even longer, I was finally informed that the check may never have been sent because my payment address was not on file. What upsets me most is not just the delay, but the lack of accurate information and accountability. I spent over two weeks calling for updates, and no one identified the actual issue until today. Every time I called, I was simply told to wait longer. These benefits are meant to help people during difficult times when they cannot work. Many people, including parents recovering from childbirth and individuals dealing with serious health issues, depend on these payments to support their families. Delays, poor communication, and inconsistent information create unnecessary stress during an already challenging time. I hope Equitable improves its customer service processes and communication because no one should have to fight this hard to receive benefits that have already been approved.

Absolutely terrible, unethical company. Helping my wife roll over her 403b account and it honestly feels like they are doing everything they legally can do to make this process impossible. Equitable was caught being predatory at my wife's public school by cold emailing teaching pretending to be officially affiliated with the school district, which they were not. Warning emails were sent from the administration to not trust Equitable and that they were misrepresenting themselves as being employer-sanctioned, but really found the email addresses of unsuspecting teachers online and tried to take advantage of them not knowing. I have a lot of experience working with financial institutions, but Equitable is astonishingly unhelpful and purposely buries the process of how to get your money deep inside layers of red tape. I can't express enough how much you should stay far, far away from this company at all costs. Dishonest, extremely difficult to work with - STAY AWAY!
