8/11/26 UPDATE: *A shame? Even more so. I received a call from my local Postmaster concerning the complaint I filed on USPS. Because I live in another area my complaint was forwarded to my local to be addressed. That is crazy! So now my local Postmaster will handle the concern, instead of the post office where I paid for postage OR the post office that failed to deliver. The Smithfield PO refused to refund the postage paid; therefore the amazing Postmaster at my local is taking care of that. This simply confirms the lack of accountability in Smithfield. If my local Postmaster can rectify the blunder, the Smithfield one could as well. BEWARE mailing anything in Smithfield that you need to be delivered, and assistance if it fails. As I was told "there is no guarantee of delivery, even with Priority Mail."* 8/11/26 - It is a shame that any person is unable to walk into a post office and be treated poorly. It this what government staff has come to? I mailed a package Priority Mail from the Smithfield post office on July 30. The package was never delivered to the recipient, and was returned to me a week later. I visited the Smithfield post office 8/10 and asked the counter person (Jan, I think) about the reason for return. She stated that the person may have moved, they didn't. She stated that I would have to bring the package back to their PO for them to better understand. As I was mentally processing the information she relayed, I stated, "okay, so I'll have the package tonight, bring it back tomorrow and figure out the reason all of this happened, then I can submit a complaint because this wasn't my error nor the recipients?" Jan said, "like I said...." I stopped her sentence and told her not to speak to me that way, I was simply processing the steps to move forward. There were at least two other patrons waiting to be helped. I went back to the Smithfield PO today and thankfully was assisted by the same gentleman that helped me mail it. I explained to him what had happened and he went to the back to talk with the post master. During our conversation Jan kept adding in statements, which wasn't necessary, as I now had a kind and helpful person. When the gentleman was reading the tracking information I could hear what he was saying. He stated that the postal carrier for the recipient did not handle this properly. While I was waiting for him to return with more information "Jan" and another postal clerk were standing in the middle station and Jan was speaking negatively about 2 other patrons, while customers were also in the area. At one point Jan said that one of them owned a business and one person mails all of her packages in pink. Jan stated that one of the women came in to ask about something and she explained that "it was the po box rent due, she would receive a second notice... and to come in there first thing in the morning with that attitude." This was the most unprofessional I have personally ever been treated and unbelievably unprofessional to be speaking of local customers at the counter, let alone in the presence of other patrons. The gentleman that helped me with mailing and answering my questions today has always been great. I hope that he is always there whenever I have to mail something or have an issue and need direction. I will never deal with "Jan" again, if I never mail another package.
