I am extremely disappointed with the handling of a printing-quality issue involving TOG.ink/The Occasions Group, which operates within the Taylor Corporation organization.
I ordered custom letterpress pieces using professionally created artwork. What I received was visibly blurry, with fine lines bleeding/blending together, and colors that were significantly different from the colors in the submitted artwork. This was not a matter of expecting a handmade printing process to be perfectly identical from piece to piece. The overall appearance of the finished product was materially different from the artwork that was submitted.
The monogram in particular contains crisp, defined linework in the original file. In the finished product, those lines visibly blur together and lose definition. The color discrepancy compounds the problem—the finished colors do not accurately resemble the colors represented in the submitted design. The result is not something I consider usable for its intended purpose.
When I raised these concerns, TOG.ink acknowledged that fine lines, subtle colors, letterpress, and absorbent cotton stock can cause details to soften and colors to reproduce differently. However, none of these alleged limitations were communicated to me before they produced the order.
That is one of my biggest concerns with this experience. If a professional printing company determines that artwork is likely to become blurry or that its colors cannot be reproduced reasonably accurately using a customer’s selected printing process and stock, that should be addressed during pre-production. I could have modified the artwork, selected different colors, changed the paper, or chosen another printing process.
Instead, the company accepted the artwork, produced the entire order without warning me of these issues, and then cited the limitations of its own printing process after I complained about the resulting quality.
I attempted repeatedly to reach a reasonable resolution and ultimately escalated the matter within the broader corporate organization. I was told that the order had been reviewed multiple times, that the company considered the finished product acceptable, and that contacting additional departments would not change its decision regarding a full refund.
I understand that letterpress inherently involves some variation. Blurriness that destroys fine details and substantial discrepancies in the intended colors are not the minor variations I was expecting or complaining about. Had I been warned that my submitted design would reproduce this way, I obviously would not have authorized the order as-is.
For a company operating within an organization of Taylor Corporation’s size and experience in the printing industry, I expected considerably better pre-production quality control and accountability when a finished product was so visibly different from the submitted artwork.
Unfortunately, I was left with an order I cannot use and a company unwilling to provide a satisfactory resolution. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering specialty printing through TOG.ink obtain explicit written confirmation regarding both fine-detail reproduction and color accuracy before allowing an order to go into production.
