- JSJames SmithApr 8, 20261.0If you’re against over-surveillance, value your digital privacy, or simply don’t wish to give away your PII for no reason, don’t bother with FedEx. I came in to ship a basic package containing an accessory - nothing controlled, nothing 21+. The gentleman asked if I had shipped with FedEx before, I told him “no,” and was about to give him my name/return address as is standard. He asked to see my ID. I didn’t have it on my person so I showed him a photocopy I had on my phone just in case, as I figured he probably just needed to see it visually. He told me that he was unable to service me as “digital ID has not rolled out yet” and he “needs to see the physical ID in order to SCAN it” into the system. I left right away. I went to the USPS, a government agency mind you, and asked them if they require this. They don’t even require IDs for such packages! So this clearly has nothing to do with ‘safety,’ or liability, or crime prevention. It’s actually less safe as your scanned ID will be in FedEx’s system (opening yourself up to identity theft). The goal here is surveillance. So FedEx shows itself to be a company that is going above and beyond what even the government is doing surveillance-wise — asking to scan IDs for the most basic service. Such companies do not deserve your business. For regular packages, UPS only checks IDs visually, USPS doesn’t at all. Take your business there.
