Staff were very knowledgeable, walked me through the process & got my package sent for half of what I thought it would cost. Open later than UPS on weekends so I could knock out this errand.

The post office was randomly closed when I arrived fifteen minutes before it was scheduled to close at 5pm. There was no notice on the website and no way of me knowing they had closed early. The staff at the postal museum told me the post office had actually not been open at all today, again with no reason or announcement. I specifically came in today because I have work when the postal office is open on weekdays. Even if the post office had a valid reason for closing early or not opening, you cannot keep customers uninformed. Not all of us have time and money to waste on a weekend just to not be able to access a public service during posted and advertised opening hours on a regular non-public holiday day. They are closed on Sundays and the nearest alternative USPS closes early on Saturdays. Update your hours if you are unwilling to stay open.

Dimly lit with homeless beggars approaching customers. Not safe.

I made an appointment online for my passport renewal at this location for 1:15 pm. When I arrived, I was told y My. Kyle that Ms. Cherry left for the day, and had “called” people to come in earlier than 1 pm for their appointment. I did not receive a call, text, email or voice message. As you can see by the sign, that passport services are supposed to be available until 2:45 pm by appointment. I went back inside to take this picture, still no Ms. Cherry. The number I was given to call Ms. Bynum, who is the supervisor for this branch, never transferred to a person, voicemail, or operator.

After two failed trips, I feel that I have an obligation to leave a negative review to warn others about my really disappointing experience with this post office's passport "services" at this "National Capitol" location.
First attempt: The USPS website says that walk-in appointments for this location is TUES/THURS/FRI from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. That is NOT true, at least according to the on-site staff. I showed up at 9:45 p.m. on a Friday, and the on-site staff told me that I had missed the window for a passport appointment and pointed me to an on-site sign stating 9 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. I showed the on-site staff what the USPS website said, but to no avail.
Second attempt: I arrived at the location again the following Friday - this time right at 9:00 a.m. There was one on-site employee working, but he told me that the person responsible for passport services was not in yet, might not come in until 9:45 a.m. When I pointed out that I was turned away last time (despite the website's stated availability for walk-in passport appointments) at 9:45 a.m., the employee said that he'd call out for his colleague that I showed up before the deadline. Then I waited - all the way until 9:45 a.m. The person responsible for supporting walk-in passport services never showed. Instead, I was told by a second employee that the passport-services employee was not going to be in today.
Very frustrating, particularly as the passport application is for my son, who must be physically present along with my wife for the appointment. Just wasted time/energy. And before anyone says, "why not just book a designated day/time for a passport appointment?" I unfortunately tried that, too - albeit a different location - and the passport-services employee was also a no-show. Fingers crossed on the next (sure to be a couple) attempts...
