In Silverthorne, Colorado, the local post office and police department crossed a line when they tried to stop a man from recording in a public space. Jason Gutterman and his son entered the post office to film public areas like PO boxes and bulletin boards as part of a First Amendment audit. Employees and customers demanded he stop and leave, but he stood his ground, citing USPS Poster 7, which allows photography for news purposes in lobbies and public areas. When officers arrived, instead of protecting his constitutional rights, they sided with the staff and pressured him to stop filming and exit the building. This wasn’t some private space — it was a publicly accessible federal building where people have every right to record what’s in plain view. The police essentially acted as enforcers for a policy that clashed with free speech protections. The town later paid Gutterman a $9,500 settlement, calling it an economic decision to avoid a lawsuit. No admission of wrongdoing, but the payout speaks volumes. It shows how quickly authorities can trample on our right to document public officials and spaces, only to backpedal when challenged. This incident should remind everyone: your phone is a powerful tool for accountability. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise in a public place.

I had never had any problems with this post office until Nick started working there. The Dillon post office became a headache when he was there, and Nick was never helpful. Now he works in Silverthorne, and I don’t understand why whenever he is working, my packages can never be found. He just tells you to write your number on a piece of paper and says they will call if they find your package, which never happens. He seems to prefer being on his phone instead of helping customers.

This 5 star review is specifically for Ryan! Ryan is the man. He went above and beyond for me to retrieve a package. He went out of his way to snag a very important package for me that was delivered to the wrong post office. He called me to tell me he successfully retrieved my package and put it in my box. If I could give more stars for Ryan, I would.

They close randomly, etc. Don’t have your UPS or FedEx delivered here, have them deliver to your house. Post office often signs package recieved with “S Thorne” which doesn’t help knowing who actually signed off on a package. Nice people but manages poorly!
