  One star for the notary service. My wife and I brought in a standard retirement plan spousal consent form with a pre-printed notary certificate. It required only that the notary certify I appeared, showed ID, and acknowledged being the spouse of the participant. We both had valid government ID and offered supporting documentation as well. The notary, Rommel, refused. He said he couldn't "endorse" that we were married, which is not what the certificate asked, claimed he "had to follow the law," and would only put his own signature next to mine on a different form that carried no notarial effect and wouldn't have satisfied the requirements. He offered no real alternative and sent us away. A notary at another location completed the exact same document the same day in about five minutes, stamp and all. So the document was lawful and routine; this store's notary just didn't understand his own job. We lost hours on a deadline-sensitive financial document. If your notarization involves anything beyond the most basic signature, go somewhere staffed by someone who knows California notary law.

  I got personal service and attention by the store owner, Rommel Salveron. We are moving from 150 miles away with all the stress and anxiousness that implies. Rommel's cool, friendly demeanor was an oasis of calm as we set up a mailbox.
