I would give Fed Ex at the California Avenue, Palo Alto location ZERO stars if I could. I so rarely write negative reviews because not only to negative experiences often fail to reach the point where I want to spend more energy on them, but also I like to off-set what I believe is to be a strong negative bias in reviews. All of this being said, Fed Ex has 100% earned a lifelong ban from any of my business. Period. Read on to see why. In February, I mailed a package 2 day to NYC from the California Avenue in Palo Alto CA store. No ID was requested. I paid by google pay on my phone. The very next day, I mailed another package 2-day fed ex to the same address in NYC, but I was told both by the Menlo Park CA office and the Calif Ave office that I needed to show an ID if I didn't have an account, despite my being able to ship a package with no ID and no account the previous day. The package was important so I opened an account and the Menlo Park store was very helpful in getting the package out. Last Wednesday (March 25) I was at the California Ave store wanting to ship something overnight to Honolulu, HI. I said I had an account. The person helping me (the manager of the store according to his nametag) said I had to give him an account number. I asked if we could look up the account number any other way and he said "No. We do not look up account numbers for your privacy protection." WOW. I had an ID so I shipped the package by showing my ID but the idea that I MUST either show an ID OR have an account that Fed Ex will absolutely NOT help me look up is absolutely ridiculous. The requirement of an ID is a violation of privacy already. Neither UPS nor USPS require an ID to ship a package. Further, refusing to look up my account even with my ID in hand is plain mean-spirited and lazy. The policies of Fed Ex are ridiculous to the extreme and absolutely not in line with UPS or USPS. I will *never* send anything via Fed Ex again. Period. I am still steamed about this series of events.
