I have been through 5 different closing processes and to be completely honest and transparent my experience with First American was by far the worse of them all. They, unfortunately were in charge of handling the escrow process for a house we recently bought, and they definitely made this process a lot more stressful and painful than it needed to be. From the start the communication was so poor, getting an answer to our questions was like pulling teeth and instead of them liaising as a neutral party between the seller and buyer it was obvious that they were not there to protect or inform either one of us.
When we opened escrow we were first assigned to Jessica, but she was shortly after that moved to another office so we were told we would be transferred to Debbie who was supposed to be our new agent. However in the entire process we spoke with her only once, the remaining time we were bounced like a hot potato among Christine, Ethan and Katie. I understand that this takes a whole team, but the problem with being bounced around 5 different people was that they all gave us different information and did not communicate among themselves. One of them would send us a request to sign a document, which we would complete and return and the rest would not be aware this had been done and would then sent it to us again. The documents would be in our file they just simply wouldn’t check, so I ended up having to do their job and manage documents needed plus mediate between ourselves and the buyers.
As we were approaching closing day, I called a few times specifically to ask when/how we could schedule signing so that we could plan accordingly, and every time they said they could not give me any information at that time even though we had been cleared. What they failed to disclose was that due to the location of the house we were required to sign 2 days before the actual closing day, they knew it all along but never shared this information with us until it was to late. When they finally called us to schedule signing they told us it had to be that same day they were calling. Obviously this resulted in a very stressful next couple of days trying to get signatures and a delay in getting recording. All of this could have been avoided if they had simply communicated with us or answered my questions when I called them directly to ask this well ahead of time. Instead they didn’t communicate, withheld information and to make things worse, acted bothered and annoyed when we inquired or asked for information.
This is a process that requires a timely and effective management of documentation, as well as proper communication among all parties. First American failed to do this. What is even more insulting is that they have been aware of their poor performance for years now, if you look at past reviews this is not the first time accusations like this have been reported. And yet, there is nothing First American has done to retrain their representatives and improve the service they are being paid to provide. It is shameful that such a big agency is not able to maintain a better quality of service.
