I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience bothered me because it wasn't about waiting another minute. It was about accountability. I came into the store to drop off Amazon returns, they were two large packages. Both shipping labels were already printed. I had my 8-year-old and my 2-year-old with me and stood in line for several minutes while both employees finished helping their current customers. When it became obvious they were wrapping up, I set one of my packages on the shipping counter, told my 8-year-old to hold our place in line, picked up my 2-year-old, and said I was running to the car to grab the second package. I was gone for less than 30 seconds. When I came back carrying my toddler and the second large box, one employee had sat down at a computer and the other was helping the man who had been standing behind my son in line. I asked my son, "You couldn't have stepped up?" The employee immediately replied, "I didn't know you were in line." That's the part I simply cannot accept. I had been standing there for several minutes. My package was sitting on the shipping counter with the label ready. My 8-year-old was still standing exactly where I left him. I had verbally said I was going to grab the other package, and several customers watched me walk out and come right back. This wasn't someone disappearing for ten minutes. This was a mother grabbing the second box from her car while carrying a toddler. Another customer later said she thought the other employee was going to come back and help me. I told her, "So did I." That is when it was explained that the other employee was a graphic designer and apparently couldn't help with shipping. But how would any customer know that? When I walked in, both women were helping customers. No one explained that only one employee could process shipping. Nothing about the situation suggested I needed to wait for one specific person, and no one said a word when I placed my package on the shipping counter. The frustrating part wasn't the mistake. Mistakes happen. The frustrating part was everyone pretending the situation wasn't obvious. The customer who stepped in front of my 8-year-old never acknowledged that we had been there first. No one in line spoke up. No employee simply said, "I'm sorry, we should have waited for you." Instead, I was told they had no idea I was in line. Then another customer suggested I should be teaching my children kindness. Actually, I was teaching them accountability. Kindness would have been the gentleman waiting his turn instead of stepping in front of a child holding his family's place in line. Kindness would have been someone offering to hold the door as I struggled back inside carrying a toddler wrapped around my neck and a large package. Kindness would have been an employee saying, "Sir, she was here first." Instead, everyone defended pretending not to notice what was happening. Mistakes are part of life. What matters is whether we acknowledge them and make them right. Saying "I didn't know you were in line" in a situation where every indicator suggested otherwise doesn't feel like accountability—it feels like avoiding it. That's the lesson I wanted my children to see. Not that we should be unkind, but that when something is obviously wrong, we shouldn't pretend it isn't just because speaking up is uncomfortable.
