I have had the best experiences at our local UPS store. They helped me ship my dad's pacemaker to an organization that reuses them and keeps them out of landfills while helping individuals who could otherwise not access this level of care. Absolutely terrible, disappointing experience. I went in asking for something incredibly simple — to have my labels printed on regular paper, not sticky paper. I specifically explained that I wanted to tape them on myself because I already had a setup that worked for me. Instead of listening or trying to accommodate such a basic request, they told me they only print on sticky paper. They refused to print my labels the way I asked, even though I had the file saved exactly how I wanted it printed.
When I expressed my frustration, I wasn’t rude — I was clear about what I needed and why. What made this situation worse wasn’t just the refusal to help, but the condescending tone in the owner’s follow-up. Their response to my experience was:
“As a small business owner yourself, you certainly can understand and appreciate the need for any business, in my case, another small business, to have minimum pricing for products and services.
Today, my staff member and I provided you with hometown customer service and explained our pricing.
I am sorry those prices didn’t meet your budget or expectations.”
This reply completely misses the point. My complaint wasn’t about pricing — it was about refusing to provide the service as requested and the lack of basic flexibility or understanding. I never once asked for a discount or said I couldn’t afford their services. I simply wanted the job done a certain way, on regular paper, and they refused to do it. Turning that into a “budget” issue is incredibly dismissive and misleading.
After leaving, I went to a locally-owned print shop — not a franchise, not a chain — and they treated me with genuine respect. They listened, understood what I needed, and printed my labels exactly how I asked, on regular paper. And to my surprise, they did it for free — not because I expected or asked them to, but because they believed in helping people and earning trust through kindness.
That’s the difference between real hometown service and hiding behind excuses. Don’t preach about community values if you can’t even meet your customers halfway. Support the businesses that actually listen, adapt, and treat people with respect, not the ones that twist your words and blame you for expecting decent service.I’m
