Instead of asking if a customer could scan in at the self help station, he belittled him and treated him with disrespect to try and embarrass him.

The Assistant manager "J.W." attempted to explain the difference between an affidavit and a jurat and offered his "legal opinion" on both the document and which form of oath would be appropriate. After checking my ID and watching me sign the document, he refused to acknowledge my sworn statement, because it wasn't in the manner "he preferred". I am an attorney who has such documents notarized all the time. Never once have I had a notary offer legal guidance or refuse service after verifying the individual and watching a document be signed. At the time, I complained, and the owner of the store stepped in and instructed another employee to perform the notarial service, and I was able to use the document without having to reprint and resign. A few months later I returned to have a Special Warranty Deed notarized for a local client who accompanied me. The same assistant manager recognized me and categorically refused service. He also instructed the other notary not to perform the service. He said "you're not welcome here, why don't you take your business to a bank". This time, the owner wasn't there to step in. I was not rude, I did not raise my voice, nor did I use untoward language, but I left with the manager's business card. Texas Notaries Public are officers of the state and are responsible to the public of Texas for their actions when notarizing documents. J.W.'s attempt to practice law was illegal, and his determination to refuse service is both petty and unprofessional. If the our local UPS Store wants to discriminate against customers, then they don't deserve local business.
