I recently had a package shipped from the UPS store in Sumpter S.C. to my home in Northumberland Pa.. The item being shipped was a stoneware pottery jug that I purchased from an auction in South Carolina. The auctioneer was kind enough to drop the jug off at this UPS store for shipping. Shortly after the auctioneer dropped it off he updated me saying he had dropped off the jug and that the prices mentioned were "outrageous" in his opinion. A few days later I received a package at my house that resembled a small appliance on my porch. The box measured 25"x25"x20". When I opened the box there was this massive amount of bubble wrap and my invoice telling me that the shipping cost was $306. After almost falling over, I called the UPS store requesting to speak to the manager. The employee was very nice and said that her manager was not in but would return my call shortly. Two days later I again attempted to reach the manager who then returned my call the following day. The manager said she would look into the shipping and get back to me. Three days later, I again called to speak to the manager who was now on vacation. Waiting more than a week for to return I again called the store. When asked if there was any resolution her reply was that the shipping costs were accurate and that they were not going to do anything. The item that I was shipping was a pottery jug approximately 12"x 18" and weighs approximately 10 pounds with a value of $300. Using their own UPS shipping calculator for what would be a properly sized 18"x18"x24" box the shipping costs should be $64.82. Including costs for a box, packing supplies, labor and insurance, I am still hard pressed to get to $150. I have items shipped on a daily basis and have used many UPS stores to take care of my shipping needs. Unfortunately, there is a huge disparity in privately owned stores and their willingness to take advantage of people. Most are very conscious of their pricing, not all. I have had very similar items shipped from Arizona, Colorado and California for half the price of this store. Just as a reference, a one-way flight from Myrtle Beach up here is about $80, a one-way Greyhound bus ticket is under $200, or you can get an oversized package shipped to you for $306. So, if you need to get something shipped, toss it on a plane seat, put it on a bus or take it somewhere else but think twice about shipping something here. Hopefully this saves you some money and aggravation.
