Said they attempted to deliver a package when I was home. They never actually made the attempt. I got the email about 4 hours before our neighborhood delivery time. When I tried to call to find out why it wasn't delivered (they said my mailbox was full when it was actually empty) I could only request a redelivery. Never got to speak to a person, only the automated system.

First of all. If I could simply rate my neighborhood mail carrier, She would get 5-STARS. She is great and very helpful. My issue is with how the Post Office is managed. Simply put, their vehicles must not be large enough. If a carrier doesn't have room on his/her vehicle for all packages destined for customers along their route, the packages that don't fit are left behind and marked to reflect a failed delivery attempt. This forces the customer to request re-delivery even though a delivery was never actually attempted. I know this is happening for two reasons: 1. Occasionally, I get "attempted delivery" notices for packages I am expecting. I get these notices via text from USPS or the company shipping me a product. These texts usually come in between 7 and 8 AM. My carrier doesn't deliver in my area until around 11:00 AM. I work from home, so even if an attempt were made at 7 AM I would typically be there to accept it. 2. When I brought this up a couple of years ago, the local Post Master confirmed it was standard procedure. I'm not sure if he is still there. I've recently tried to call a few times, but nobody answers the phone. This wouldn't be a big deal to me if the Post Office automatically scheduled my delivery for the next day. That isn't how it works though. Even though an actual delivery attempt was not made, the customer must request re-delivery. This causes the package to arrive two days later than expected. Or, I can drive 10 miles to the post office to pick the package up the next day (still a day late). Again, the carrier that delivers mail to my home is great. She is a 5-STAR all the way. Bottom line: This policy is inconsiderate and unethical. The Post Office needs to get the carriers larger vehicles to accommodate all the mail scheduled for delivery on a given route. If this is a resource issue, fine I get that. However, the customer should not be required to request re-delivery when a delivery was never attempted in the first place.
