Supposed to close at 6 on Saturday’s, I came at 5:45 and it’s all locked up. Why? Very inconvenient.

When this UPS Store first opened, there was one employee working there and he was extremely friendly and helpful. He was always polite and consistently provided excellent customer service. Unfortunately, I don't see him in there anymore, and the newer employees have been unhelpful and impolite. Even before today’s experience, there has been a noticeable pattern of rudeness and dismissive behavior.
On several recent visits, the staff has come across as indifferent and unhelpful. Prior to today's incident, the last time I stopped in to drop off a return, the employee behind the counter told me to use the drop-off slot. The package was clearly too large to fit, but he acted as if that was somehow my fault. When he eventually came over and tried it himself, he also couldn’t fit it through the slot—which was obvious from the start when I balked at his instruction knowing my package was too large to fit. His attitude during that interaction was unnecessary and unprofessional.
Today I went in to pick up a very important package and saw the same two employees behind the counter. When I told one of them, I was there to pick up a package (with urgency in my tone as I had left my office briefly just to pick up my package), he just stared at me without saying anything which annoyed me. I had to ask him what information he needed from me to proceed—I offered my ID, which he didn't even look at or ask for which is a security breach, but whatever. At that point, after a frustrating back and forth on the heels of multiple experiences with the same awkward and dismissive behavior, my patience was understandably thin, and I had to throw around an attitude of my own which as an NYC native can be startling for some (the NYC transplant customer at the counter also probably thought I was being jerk, when in reality my attitude had been a long time coming and justifiably so).
The owner was standing in the back observing the interaction but didn’t step in or attempt to address the situation. He stared at me with the same vacant minded glare as if I was a deranged customer when in reality I was frustrated by the sequence of horrible service over the last 2-3 months. Seriously, what happened to the nice guy who opened the store?
Customer service basics seem to be missing here. If a customer appears frustrated, in rush, etc. it’s the staff’s responsibility to guide the interaction and help resolve the issue with kindness. Customers come in simply to send packages or pick up their belongings. Providing polite, basic service shouldn’t be difficult—even if the customer is displaying a sense of urgency.
I was patient during my first few experiences with the new staff, but the repeated dismissive behavior has made it difficult to continue giving this location the benefit of the doubt.
My recommendation to the owner would be to retrain the staff—and possibly revisit the expectations for customer service overall. If a customer is in rush or they seem agitated, don't jump to conclusions as if you'd know anything about them, but shift to professionalism and courtesy because that will go a long way toward improving the experience for customers.
I have to use this location because of it's proximity to my building, if there is another problem with the staff or service, I will not hesitate to escalate this matter as far as humanly possible.
If my customer service experiences improve, I will adjust and update my review accordingly.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
