To counterbalance some of the bad reviews:
I mailed a manila envelope (put it into the slot) with very important documents inside. And a half hour later I realized I forgot to put stamps on it.
I rushed back, in a very high state of anxiety. I was helped to calm down by two really wonderful people, Irma and Joel. Joel took me back to help me find the envelope with him. And thank god it hadn't gone out yet.
So I just wanted to praise them, for not only helping me, but telling me everything would be OK.

Drop off box is still broken and has been for at least 4 months. Instead of providing an alternative drop off option, they just expect everyone to line up. They say they have no clue when it will be fixed.

PSA: If you need to drop off a package and the chute is "Out of Service", go to the last window with a small sign saying to drop off packages there.

I went here to get my passport application done. Since the location offered passport photo service, I had the photo taken there as well. I figured I'd save time that way. Unfortunately, the photo taken didn't meet the requirements for the passport application and now I have to go somewhere else to get another photo taken and then mail that in. I then also have to go back to the post office to get a refund since they didn't do the job properly. Hopefully they aren't going to fight me on that. Just in case, I have to go to Staples and pay to have a copy of the rejection letter made as well. The only silver lining here is that I didn't like how I looked in the photo anyway and now I have a chance to do better.
BLUF: don't get your passport photo taken here. They won't do it right and you'll have to get it done again elsewhere.

I have lived near this post office for several years (zip code 10028) and generally I have had positive experiences. Today I had incredible help when an international package that was sent to me with an incorrect address was found and held for me to pick up at the post office. Tracking for my package initially said that it was out for delivery. Then it changed to “no addressee - being returned to sender”. I first called the general line and they opened a claim and put a freeze on the package. She also gave me the number for my local post office. When I called, the person I reached paged both the carrier for my route and the supervisor. Even though two numbers on the address were swapped, they found my package and set it aside for me to pick it up! It had taken 3 weeks for the package to arrive from Swedish Lapland, so if it had really been sent back, I probably wouldn’t have seen my Christmas present for months. All of this happened at a busy Manhattan post office on December 22nd. I am really impressed with the service.
