FORMAL COMPLAINT, then praise. I just returned home from visiting Staples, store #1447 in Farmington, NM and I have NEVER been treated more poorly by any manager in my life. I had finished my business with the print center (which was awesome) then asked the same gal where the index cards were, at around 6:25pm. She radioed the question and got back the response isle 13, maybe. I told her I did not know where that was and she pointed off into a general direction in the rear of the store. There was at least one person available to walk me to where they were to save me the trouble of finding if MAYBE they were there, but for some reason nobody even offered. I do not pay Staples prices to be treated like a cog or a wallet; I go for friendly customer service. Now comes my formal complaint, and I expect to hear back from upper management about this. When I arrived at the register (about 6:30pm), I was annoyed that I was not shown where the cards were and maybe talked into spending more money (I really was in the mood to be shmoozed by one of the salespeople), but was willing to let that go. The woman who ran the register (at the tech station) could tell I was annoyed at something and gleefully told me I should smile more (she needled me with something else before this but I don't remember it), because that's what all of the men tell her to do. I let that pass because I frankly do not care to respond to unsolicited sermons about individual politics. The transaction was complete and I was just about to walk out (still hadn't said more than three neutral words to her) when she triumphantly closed her till (I had paid with a $5 note) and said, and I quote, "Now you know how a woman feels!" I immediately asked for a refund. While she was doing that she snipped, "What, you didn't like me being so honest?" I asked her if she was the manager on duty, to which she replied yes. I said that was a shame. She laid my $5 on the counter and smugly laid the return receipt in front of it and said, "Aaaaand since it is company policy, I need your signature..." I asked, "Is that what I gave you?" and picked up the $5 and walked out, saying have a nice day or a good night...whatever. I was courteous, but I did not sign the receipt. To treat one segment of your customers with such contempt and open hatred is unacceptable. At minimum I should be given a most abject apology, in person, and a promise that will never happen again. I require a representative from your company to contact me as soon as possible to set this in motion. Now for the praise! The gal at the print station was kind, attentive, and very helpful. I was helped in the precise way I required and she did so with a big smile. I only wish all of your employees were like she was.
