I mailed a registered insured letter(cost 20 dollars 88 cents) from the Metuchen Post Office on Central Avenue ( Why is this post office in such a run down condition, in a great neighborhood, along with the potholed parking lot? Another example of public poverty and private affluence?) on May 29th 2024, confident that the letter and its contents would reach the addressee, my daughter at her college in New Hampshire by June 7th 2024, her graduation day. Below is the snail paced journey of this important letter. The letter arrived at the Hanover, NH Post office on June 14th 2024. By that time my daughter had graduated and returned home. She had notified the Hanover College Post Office that the item had to be returned to the sender. It reached my home in Edison on July 17th 2024– the letter took 16 days to get to New Hampshire and the return journey took 32 days. The “wandering time” was 48 days. Just as I was filing domestic claims with USPS(another hassle) the postman delivered the letter. He had a look of dismay on his face when he looked at the dates on the worn out envelope. The thick white envelope was battered, bruised, bandaged in brown paper. Its contents including several hundred dollar bills and my letter congratulating my daughter on her achievement was secure. However, the harm was done. Timing is important. The Post Office let me down. It is the duty of the Post Office to investigate the bottlenecks and delays and take corrective measures. Fortunately, the tracking system provides real time empirical evidence. I know the culprits. I know the bottlenecks. Since I was in the grading business for half a century, I shall give the USPS a big fat F. However, in terms of honesty and securing the severely wounded envelope the service deserves A. And the Dartmouth College post office in New Hampshire, which repeatedly checked the USPS affiliates as to the cause of delay, my deep gratitude. Dartmouth College cares. This review is posted to the USPS Inspector General as well as the Congressional Office expecting them to perform their oversight duties. In the meantime, fortunately in our great country we have alternative modes of delivery and service. But I still want to give USPS another chance, I will keep you posted. Dr. Mervyn D’Souza, Edison NJ.
