Went from “Advanced” to Actively Hostile to Power Users
I’ve been a Bell customer for years, and what used to be a solid service has quietly gone downhill — not because of speed, but because of control, transparency, and honesty.
On paper, Bell advertises “advanced” features like port forwarding, Advanced DMZ, and high-speed fiber (3–3.5 Gb). In reality, if you’re even slightly technical and want to self-host one single service, you’re now fighting the network instead of using it.
Here’s the core issue:
Bell silently places residential fiber customers behind CGNAT. You still get an IP address that looks public, but inbound traffic never reaches your router. Port forwarding doesn’t work. DMZ doesn’t work. Nothing works — and there is no warning that this has happened.
I spent an entire night (8+ hours) debugging my setup:
Router config ✔
Server config ✔
Firewall ✔
External testing ✔
Everything was correct — because the problem wasn’t on my end at all. It was upstream, hidden, and undisclosed.
When I contacted support, I was:
Told ports are “supported” (technically true, but misleading)
Told PPPoE is “only for old copper/DSL” (factually incorrect)
Unable to get CGNAT removed
Eventually hung up on when asking for a true public IPv4
To be clear:
I’m not trying to run a data center.
I’m not abusing the network.
I just want one open port on a connection I pay real money for.
Bell hasn’t lowered quality — they’ve lowered customer agency. The service now feels designed for “plug it in and don’t touch anything,” while still pretending to offer advanced options that no longer function as expected.
If you’re a casual user who only streams Netflix, you’ll probably never notice.
If you’re a power user, homelabber, or developer — this service will actively waste your time.
