Accidentally sent my package back to the sender when they said they would hold it for 15 days- 100% mistake on their part

Giving two stars because in general, if I have an issue with a package or something, the staff at the physical location usually do their best to make it right. Whenever I have a package for pickup, I never have any issues and I'm usually in and out if there's no line.
However, I just had a recent experience that was unable to be remedied and has left me basically S.O.L. with receiving a package. I had a package shipped to me by a seller that has shipped packages to me NUMEROUS times over the 3 years I've been living in the area. Never any issues at all. This seller has my address in the system and I am verifiably a resident there.
Yesterday, I was due to receive another package. But it never came. I checked the tracking information and the package was marked as RETURNED TO SENDER. Not "attempted delivery," not "left in mail room" (which almost every package has been left before), it was straight up returned to sender.
I called this location this morning. The man that picked up the phone was very apologetic. He said he scoured the entire office for it and could not locate it, so the package was actually returned all the way to sender. The man was nice and I could tell he felt really bad, and he would talk to the carrier that was on my mail route yesterday to figure out what happened. This man, and other similar office workers I've talked to in the past, are the reason I'm giving this location another star.
However, there's really no excuse as to why this package was sent back for LITERALLY no reason. The mail carrier in charge of this package catastrophically messed up my delivery, and now either myself or the seller is going to be on the hook for resending it. I don't think there's any excuse for this; and they couldn't even mark it for pickup or to attempt redelivery, which would have been slightly inconvenient but not a huge loss? Ridiculous.
