I was explicitly informed by Science Care, the company handling my father’s cremated remains, that a signature would be required and that someone needed to be home to accept delivery. Because of this, I worked from home all week to ensure I would be present.
Despite this requirement, the postal carrier, Patty H. did not ring the doorbell or attempt delivery at my home. We have exterior cameras that would have recorded any approach to the door, and no attempt was made. Instead, the carrier signed for the package herself and left it in our mailbox at the end of the driveway with the regular mail.
The package was clearly marked “Signature Required” and “Cremated Remains.” I did not authorize anyone to sign on my behalf.
We only discovered it had been delivered when my husband checked the mail later that evening. My father’s remains had been left unattended in approximately 20-degree weather.
I contacted the Lake Villa Post Office and spoke with a representative named V who confirmed the carrier signed for the package herself. When I asked for additional information or to speak with a supervisor or postal inspector, I was not provided meaningful assistance, and no one expressed appropriate concern about the seriousness of the situation.
This is not a minor delivery issue. Signing for someone else’s package — especially one containing human remains — is a serious breach of protocol, trust, and basic decency.
I was home, prepared, and expecting to personally receive my father’s remains. This was entirely preventable and made an already difficult time even more distressing. I hope procedures are reviewed and corrective action taken so no other family experiences something like this.

Very rude and unprofessional staff. I understand it may be difficult to work with the public. I get it but no need to be consistently rude and disrespectful.

The staff are usually friendly. Best to go middle of the week to get fast service.

This is a tragedy that this is what we get for a post office. Several missing packages. When jumping through the hoops and ladders to send then questions about where your mail is at... meaning multiple questions.. Josue will email you back a very vague email then hold your mail without telling you. Several missed delivery including birthday presents.

Your online redelivery system doesn't work. Not delivering mails and giving non-working redelivery options is wild.
