This post office at 1510 East 55th is so badly run. December 30th there were 20 people waiting at noon for the clerk to return and reopen the office. There was a note on the outside of the locked door that said "intermission." No return time listed and after almost 40 minutes a clerk did return. A man from the post office came during this time to pick up the mail and called downtown he said but then he left because he couldn't wait any longer. I had been to the same place the day before and found they were out of stamps and the machine was broken. Hyde Park needs a great post office. These women should be fired and replaced with people who do their job.

Staff was very pleasant to work with. They were out of stamps and other customers came unprepared and that slows things down.
But slow customers is not their fault.
They worked as fast as the customers would move.

This post office has a serious morale problem. The abusive staff often takes an afternoon siesta and they just close the post office, lock the door and post a handwritten sign on the front door at 3:30 in the afternoon saying that they are closed for 30-60 minutes in the middle of the day. It’s a weirdly hostile environment due to the tenured employees seeming to hate their jobs and wanting to vent their frustration on as many customers as possible. Everyone I know avoids this awful post office staff whenever possible. Sad that the USPS has let this go on for 20 years. The other local post offices around Hyde Park are really great! But avoid this one if you can.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to formally lodge a complaint and demand the immediate resignation of the customer service agent at your post office at 1510 E 55th Street, Hyde Park Chicago who displayed unethical, unprofessional, and discriminatory behavior toward me on December 8, 2025.
This morning, I arrived at the post office at the publicly promoted opening time of 8:30 a.m. No staff appeared until 8:50 a.m., and the doors did not open until 9:00 a.m. Even then, there was no agent available to conduct transactions. I was forced to use the kiosk and return later with one of my packages.
After finishing work, I returned to the post office. I joined the line as the seventh or eighth customer, with my package fully prepared except for the address, which I was writing on the box while waiting. At that moment, the customer service agent singled me out, referring to me as “Sir,” and ordered me to leave the line because my package was “not ready.” I explained that I was simply writing the address and would be finished by the
time she called me forward. I also mentioned her that I had already waited 45 minutes earlier that morning without being able to send my package.
Despite this, she insisted that I leave the line, claiming it was “her
rules.” When I stated that her demand was unfair, she escalated the situation by declaring she would not service me under any circumstances. To make matters worse, when I politely asked the gentleman behind me to hold my place, he insulted me, and the agent encouraged him to “jump ahead” because she refused to serve me. She further dismissed me by saying I could
“go to another office at 8 a.m. anytime.”
This behavior is unacceptable, discriminatory, and a blatant violation of professional standards. No customer should ever be treated with such hostility, disrespect, and denial of service. The agent’s conduct was aggressive, unnecessary, and damaging to the reputation of the postal service.
I demand that this matter be escalated immediately and that the agent in question be removed from her position. If this issue is not addressed promptly and decisively, I am prepared to take this complaint to the press and pursue further action to ensure accountability.
The postal service exists to serve the public fairly and professionally. What I experienced was the opposite, and I will not allow this matter to be ignored.
I expect a formal response within 10 business days outlining the corrective actions taken.
