Instead of simply explaining the issue like a normal professional, the staff member chose to speak down to me with a tone that suggested she was volunteering out of the goodness of her heart rather than doing the job she is paid to do. The interaction felt less like customer service and more like I should be grateful for her presence. For clarity: this was not a complex or serious issue. It was tape. A polite explanation would have taken seconds. What took longer was enduring unnecessary sarcasm, impatience, and the clear impression that customers are an inconvenience. Public-facing roles require basic courtesy. If explaining minor postage requirements is too much without making people feel small, perhaps customer service isn’t the right fit. USPS should remember that customers are not asking for charity — they are paying for a service.
