  I eentered the shop intending to buy a tub of Wrigley's, only to find it priced 50p higher than I usually pay elsewhere. Rather than overpay, I picked up a can of Nurishment and a pack of pedal bin bags instead. The shopkeeper then took an inordinate amount of time to serve, so I placed the items on the nearest available surface with the intention of returning shortly and simply walked out. As I reached the door, it was immediately apparent that the shopkeeper had wrongly assumed I was leaving with the items (the door wouldn't open). He questioned me about them, despite the fact they were plainly visible beside him. Instead of acknowledging his mistake, he launched into a patronising lecture about how "someone could steal them" because of where I had left them. This was a rather curious criticism, given that the items were within his immediate vicinity and under his own supervision. If merchandise can disappear from beside the shopkeeper, that speaks rather more to the standards of the establishment than to the conduct of its customers. The irony is that I had every intention of returning and paying for the items. After being treated with unwarranted suspicion and subjected to an entirely unnecessary rebuke, however, I have no intention of returning to that shop. There are plenty of businesses that manage to combine competitive pricing with basic courtesy; this one appears to excel at neither.
