When I approached the till, she stopped what she was doing and stared at me as though I were an inconvenience for simply being there. The conversation that followed was also unnecessarily hostile. It is a sad sad thing to spend a lifetime only to be remembered in the neighbourhood as the grumpy old moo behind the desk at the post office. An utterly bleak and disappointing legacy to leave behind for the one life you have. Good luck to her.
