Staff at this branch don't know what Poste Restante is. Maybe they need some training. I travel and use this service frequently. It is a legitimate way of getting mail delivered to the post office. But they have told me not to. I'm going to anyway.

Trying to use the post office at WH Smith in Farnham is a most dreadful soul destroying experience - and one I do anything to avoid, such is my disdain . Staff are unprofessional, shoddily dressed and impolite (feels like a permanent YTS zone). Queues last a frustratingly long time and they seem to make any part of the service as difficult and convoluted as possible...you cannot buy envelopes at the post office section, so have to purchase at front of shop then take to post office etc etc.
Stamp machines often don't work and the whole service area is littered with an assortment of warning signs and stickers on sides of service areas etc about what you can and cannot do...
Oh and a book of 4 first class stamps is now £7.00 with no guarantee of anything being delivered the next day. It is a parallel universe of ineptitude and decline.
