Two ladies arrived around 15-20 minutes before the advertised 17:30 closing time, but the Post Office queue had already been closed at around 17:05 (this was manned aswell), despite there being only 2-3customers left to serve. One lady was trying to send blood pressure medication to her husband, and the other medication to her parents. Several customers asked staff to let them join the short queue given the circumstances, but they were refused. The reason given was that staff often finish later than 17:30, so they start closing the queue from around 17:00. I completely understand staff should not be expected to work beyond their contracted hours, but if the advertised closing time is 17:30, customers arriving well before then should reasonably expect to be served. What was most disappointing was how it was handled. The WHSmith manager raised her voice at the ladies and continued shouting as they were leaving the store. The Post Office manager also stated there was no room for them to feel sympathy as they are not paid beyond their contracted hours. Regardless of whether they could be served, the situation deserved far more compassion and professionalism- particularly when essential medication was involved.
