Extremely disappointing experience with DHL for a simple personal shipment from the UK to Pune, India.
I paid a premium price expecting a smooth and professional service for a small birthday gift package for my young niece. The parcel contained nothing unusual – simply a birthday card, some stationery items, and a K-Pop Demon Hunters costume. All items were clearly declared at the point of shipment, with full details provided and checked before dispatch.
Despite this, my family in India was subjected to days of repeated requests for additional documents, invoices, explanations, and payment demands. Both the sender and recipient were constantly contacted and pressured, creating unnecessary stress and anxiety over what should have been a straightforward family gift.
What was particularly frustrating was that the value of the shipment was modest and significantly lower than the costs ultimately associated with getting the package released. Instead of enjoying a birthday surprise, my niece's family spent days dealing with administrative hurdles and repeated follow-ups from DHL representatives.
For a company charging premium courier rates, I expected efficiency, clarity, and customer support. Instead, the experience felt bureaucratic, confusing, and unnecessarily burdensome. The constant badgering for documents and information that had effectively already been provided turned a simple birthday gift into a stressful ordeal for everyone involved.
The entire process caused considerable frustration and disappointment on both the sender's and recipient's side. Based on this experience, I would be very hesitant to use DHL again for personal shipments to India and certainly would not expect the level of service that their pricing suggests.
