Extremely disappointing and unacceptable service from DHL Express
I am extremely, extremely disappointed with the service I received from DHL Express. I deliberately chose DHL Express for the first time because I trusted the DHL name and was prepared to pay significantly more than the cheaper Royal Mail option because I expected a faster, more reliable and professional service.
Unfortunately, that is absolutely not what I experienced.
I was given the option of Royal Mail Tracked for approximately £7 or DHL Express for approximately £20. I chose DHL Express and paid around £13 more because the service indicated that the parcel would most likely arrive a day earlier. I would normally use Royal Mail, so I specifically chose DHL because I trusted that paying a premium for an Express service would be worthwhile.
The seller handed the parcel to the DHL service point on Saturday morning. However, DHL later explained to me that the parcel was not actually collected from the service point until Tuesday because collections did not take place over the weekend. This meant that the expected Monday delivery was never achieved.
The tracking then became another source of frustration. There were prolonged periods with little or no meaningful tracking information. When the parcel was eventually out for delivery, DHL subsequently recorded a failed delivery/“Denied Access” attempt.
This was particularly unacceptable because no delivery attempt was actually made at my property. I was available, there was no access code or restriction, nobody knocked, nobody rang the doorbell, nobody called me, and no delivery card was left. Yet DHL’s tracking recorded an unsuccessful attempt.
I also repeatedly tried to use DHL’s delivery-management system to arrange for the parcel to be left in a safe place, but the option was unavailable and the system would not allow me to select it.
I ultimately had to spend a considerable amount of time contacting DHL customer service, explaining the situation repeatedly and trying to arrange another delivery.
I have now received the parcel, but that does not change the fact that the service I paid a premium for was extremely poor.
What makes this even more disappointing is that I contacted DHL directly and provided them with all of the details and evidence. Despite the significant delay, the disputed delivery attempt, the problems with the delivery-management system and the considerable inconvenience caused, DHL ultimately told me that they would not refund or compensate me.
For a service costing approximately £20, I find that completely unacceptable.
This was my first time choosing DHL Express over Royal Mail, and based on this experience, I genuinely see no reason to pay the substantial premium for DHL Express when the cheaper alternative would have cost considerably less.
I expected a premium service. Instead, I experienced delays, inaccurate tracking information, a delivery attempt that I dispute actually occurred, inadequate delivery-management options and an unsatisfactory response when I complained.
I am extremely dissatisfied with DHL Express and would not recommend this service based on my experience.
Use Royal Mail instead. At least they give a consistent, high quality service for customers.

Difficult to find because it's incorrectly placed on Google maps. Set your satnav to Percy Road and keep driving until you see it, you can't miss it. DHL might realise this from older reviews if they didn't keep using AI to do their replies. For now you will struggle to find DHL's address as much as they struggle to find yours, so I guess that's fair.
