Misleading Practices: Hidden Fees and Lost Opportunity to Make Informed Choices
I had an extremely frustrating experience at this post office that demonstrates a complete lack of price transparency and customer service.
I came in to ship a package. The employee quoted me $13, then pulled out a measuring tape and measured my box. The price suddenly jumped to $20—a $7 increase. I paid, confused, and asked why the price increased after she measured it. She explained they use "dimensional pricing during the holiday season."
I left, checked my receipt in the car, and saw I'd been charged for the box being 13 inches. I went back inside to ask where this pricing information was displayed in the store. She told me "it's on the USPS website," then locked the door for the day and left.
The real problem is that only after researching at home did I discover my box was ONE INCH over their dimensional limit. Had the employee told me this—before processing my payment—I could have gone one street over to the dollar store, purchased a slightly smaller box for a couple of dollars, and saved the $7 dimensional charge.
She measured my box, saw it was 1 inch over, and said nothing. She processed my $20 payment without giving me any opportunity to make an informed decision. When I asked about the charge after paying, she finally mentioned dimensional pricing—but still didn't tell me I was only 1 inch over the limit or that I could have easily avoided the fee.
This is unacceptable. The FTC Act prohibits "unfair or deceptive acts or practices" that mislead reasonable consumers. While this employee technically disclosed the fee before I left the building, she withheld the critical information I needed to avoid it:
That dimensional pricing existed
That my box exceeded the limit by only 1 inch
That I could get a smaller box and avoid the charge
This isn't about avoiding legitimate fees—it's about being denied the chance to make an informed choice. Expecting customers to research dimensional pricing thresholds on a website before visiting, while employees stay silent about simple solutions, is a "gotcha" practice that prioritizes revenue over basic customer service.
Price transparency means giving customers actionable information when they can still use it, not after the transaction is complete.

Love the staff, but I wish the post office had better hours. Either a shorter lunch break or staying open later would be wonderful. Often I can't get my packages because of the inconvenient hours here. Small town life, I guess? 😐
