I had a frustrating experience at this UPS location today. I asked to have my return scanned at the counter because I was not able to use the self-scan kiosk for this item, and I also wanted an official acceptance scan to avoid tracking delays. For anyone unfamiliar: A self-scan kiosk/drop box scan only confirms you used the kiosk; it does not mean UPS has officially taken possession of the package yet. Most retailers and companies track the return based on the date and time UPS takes official possession, not the kiosk scan. That official “acceptance” scan doesn’t happen until the package is picked up and processed later, which can delay tracking updates by 24–48 hours or more. A counter scan by an employee is an immediate proof-of-possession scan, which is especially important for time-sensitive returns. I fully understand kiosks are helpful when lines are long, but in this case it wasn’t an option for me and there was no line. Instead of assisting, the staff insisted it was “the same thing,” which is simply inaccurate, and they were rude when I tried to explain why I needed a counter scan. UPS should ensure staff are trained on this distinction and can communicate it respectfully. This visit was disappointing.
