I tried to send parcels to England again this year and had another shock at the rising costs as usual, but this time it was astronomical and in the end, prohibitive. This post office has the most stellar, professional, and kind employees, and I feel very fortunate in that, because while it's always a somewhat difficult process, this year it was very confusing, embarrassing, and sad for me and they were wonderful.
I got all the packaging and paperwork right this time, but there are new rules this year and it turned out the cost is impossible for me (anyone?!) to afford now. It costs a ridiculous amount of money for a 2 lb parcel, and my family would have had to pay a hefty £20+ COD charge when their Christmas presents arrived regardless, which has never happened before. But the thing is, you don't find that out until all the work at the counter has been done. (I did do my research ahead of time on the USPS website, to confirm the rules and learn how much to expect to pay this year, but none of this was mentioned at all. Not even post office employees have been informed.)
So I had put the two ladies who run this busy post office through all kinds of trouble to get the packages to the point where it was possible for them to be shipped at all (shipping a $25 pair of silver earrings I bought at the Kernville Museum next door to England, as we all found out together during this laborious process, is now against the rules for reasons no one can understand), only for them to be forced to cancel the whole transaction and throw out the paperwork, while patiently trying to explain the inexplicable.
These wonderful women held on to their professionalism and kindness as always, and I held onto to my Christmas cheer, at least until I got back to my car. I know, it isn't the end of the world of course, but it made me very sad. It's Christmas and I love my family.
Other customers had been lining up behind me while this was happening, I'm sure trying to be patient but it must not have been fun for them either. Of course the ladies would have to deal with their hurry and unhappiness when I left. I was miserable and apologizing as usual, although the only fault of mine was trying to send a couple of Christmas presents to my elderly brother and sister.
All the trouble had absolutely nothing to do with the ladies who work there. They were so wonderful as they always are, and so patient and kind, doing their level best to deal with an impossible system. I don't know how they keep it together every Christmas, but they do and I am so grateful.
Thank you so much once again. I promise I will only ship Christmas presents to my United States family for now, so don't be scared when you see me coming in again with a parcel! I wish you both a very Merry Christmas. ❤️
Original review:
I feel very lucky to have my little Kernville post office. Over the years, I send Christmas gift parcels out to family and friends, only to find out that they're a little too heavy or a little too large, or I've used the wrong packaging, etc., so it costs a small fortune to ship, or I have to modify my parcels to be able to afford shipping at all.
It's always a shock when that happens, it's always been my ignorance that causes the problems, and the folks there are always very supportive and kind. The manager is especially knowledgeable and always helpful and friendly. The prices aren't their fault, and they are wonderful people.

The main postal worker there is the reason this isn't one star, she is super nice and helpful. This post office does not deliver, so you need a PO box, but the hours are very limited. If you work regular business hours you can't get packages without taking time off work. Unpredictable hours that you can't look up around the holidays. They usually don't find all your packages on the first search when you bring your slips in, so if you're receiving a surprise package or dont know how many boxes your order came in, you may miss one and they'll end up sending it back. I have been screwed over by this office so many times I have lost count, I dread going in there. I would get a PO box elsewhere if at all possible.

Packages arrive and get sent back to sender. It is astonishing how incompetent these people are.
