Yesterday I went with my mother to have a power of attorney form notarized as I help her with many things since her husband passed away. The clerk/notary called the other clerk up to witness the signature and joked “she’s trying to steal her mom’s money”. This really inappropriate joke made my mother and I uncomfortable. She then began to talk about a story she heard about someone stealing from a parent before the parent passed away. This was strange and wholly inappropriate. It was not only insulting to me, but also to my mother, who is very astute and not some helpless person who could be taken advantage of. An attempt at humor that was not necessary or welcome while creating an important legal document with a notary.
