  TLDR: mid quality and the scanning ability let me down. Maybe some people don't like constant updates but I like knowing when things go wrong. If they had communicated with me at any point about the problems with my order I wouldn't be as upset. I took four music books to minuteman to have the spines cut, then to pick them up to scan, and return them for hole punching and coiling. The cover material isn't strong so I wanted them reinforced with tape, and I was told tape wouldn't look nice, why not laminate it? I said sure. We also scan, we charge hourly for it. I say sure, it's more convenient. I pay a $30 deposit and get an email two days later saying my order is ready for pickup. I return and am charged an extra $90. I pick up the books and look at them at home. I first notice is that the laminate isn't good. There's specks, there's stains, they tried to peel off a price tag but gave up halfway and now the sticker is a lump on the back. The hole puncher wasn't aligned properly so there's extra punches that don't do anything to keep the coil in place. A page was put in backwards. They damaged three pages and replaced two with a lower res photocopy on thinner paper. At no point was I told my originals were damaged and thrown out, or that the laminate was poorly done, they just watched me pay full price and figure it out when I got home. Only 2/4 books are good. The invoice said it took them 1 hr and $75 to scan everything. I say there's no way it took that long. They said they scanned all 475 pages one by one, because the paper didn't fit in the feeder scanner, but I've used a feeder scanner to do this exact thing plenty of times myself. If they had told me "we have to do it the slow way" I would have said don't worry about it. So I got price gouged on something I could've done quicker, at the same quality level, and for free. All the work they did ended up costing as much as the books themselves. I got $30 refunded to me (and the backwards page fixed), but I could have saved $75 easily by sticking to my original plan and taking it to Staples. FYI "you can't put 9x12 through a feeder scanner" you absolutely can. A typical multifunction printer will let you input custom original sizes, for scanning or printing. The final pdf will be your set size. I looked at the manuals for a Taskalfa 4501i, a Canon C1333F and an HP MFP 8801z and they can all do this! Toshiba even has a video tutorial. If the printer has a client like Papercut (eg. public library printers) that prohibits this, you manually set the scanner to a larger size eg 11x17 and put it through the feeder like that, and because the scan is always in the top left you can use software to digitally crop all the pages at once. Select all > rotate 90°> select crop option > adjust the dimensions and the window back to 9x12 > save, you now have a 9x12 pdf. What took you 60 mins of tedious work would take me 20 maximum with basic printer and software know-how.
