The beautician “Jana” was the most sincere and caring person. She made sure she understood the type of style I wanted. She advised that the style I was thinking of might not work because of the different type of hair and the style I had chosen. She showed me a style that was similar to what I was looking for and IT TURNED OUT PERFECT!!

If I could leave zero stars, I absolutely would.
I went in around 12:45 p.m., checked in online, waited over an hour like a responsible, hopeful adult trying to glow up and keep a promise to myself about being more confident. I was next in line. Both stylists were finished for a solid 15 minutes, cutting air, pacing, discussing salmon, so I thought, okay, smooth sailing.
I was wrong.
I sit down and before we even exchange names, I’m nearly choked out with the neck strip. No “Hi, I’m ___.” No “What are we doing today?” Just immediate hostility through the mirror like my existence was mildly offensive.
I show her a very clear reference photo: a layered mullet hybrid, no shaved sides, keep my length (barely past shoulders), add aggressive layers. Simple. I even asked politely, “Are you able to do this haircut?”
That’s when the ripping into me began.
Apparently, in order to comb my hair, I need to sit 100% perfectly straight. I have FAI hip impingements, which makes that physically difficult. There was zero care or accommodation. Just moving my upper body around like I was a mannequin that wasn’t cooperating.
She repeatedly panicked about not “seeing the sides” of the style, despite it being a layered cut. I said, fine, just layer it aggressively and trim it. She insisted it was impossible to layer it into that shape (interesting, since licensed cosmetologists have managed far more complex feats than layering hair).
Then came the comments about my hair being “dead.” Not once. Multiple times.
She told me I wouldn’t like how much she’d have to cut, “more than 4 inches.” My eyes filled with tears. I explained I’ve maintained regular trims every 4–6 months for years because I’m learning how to care for my textured hair properly. She responded with, “That wasn’t an insult,” and then continued calling my hair dead while physically repositioning me.
At this point I was trying to accommodate everything. I even said, “You pick the style. If I don’t like it, it’ll grow back.” I’ve done that before and it worked out great. Instead, I was offered what felt like a 1947 throwback special that I very clearly declined.
Eventually I said just thin it because I hate how thick my hair gets in jackets and hoodies. That somehow still turned into an issue.
Then she demanded I stand up in front of the mirror to look at the back of my head because my hair was “crooked.” I said no stylist has ever complained about that before. She refused to cut my hair unless I stood up. I declined and told her she could simply even it out. She refused service.
When I said I’d go somewhere else, she replied, “I didn’t want to cut your hair anyway.”
There were nine people waiting behind me. She did not care. She continued making degrading comments (not even all included here because this would turn into a novel). The other stylist, who had been loudly narrating her life next to us, said absolutely nothing while this was happening.
For clarity: she never cut my hair.
I left and had a panic attack in my car.
I walked in excited about doing something nice for myself. I walked out feeling humiliated. I understand not every stylist can do every cut, but professionalism and basic respect cost nothing.
I did not deserve to be treated like that.
