  I am leaving this review to provide a detailed, factual account of my recent experience to help management and warn future clients, particularly those with 4C natural hair. I booked a silk press and specifically selected the hair wash as a paid add-on service. Unfortunately, the experience fell entirely short of professional standards. From the moment I sat down, the service felt incredibly rushed. It turned out it was Keely Shrake's daughter’s birthday, and it felt like she was just trying to rush through my appointment to leave. Even though I had explicitly booked and paid for the wash add-on, she asked me, "Are we gonna do a wash?"-as if she didn't want to perform the service I paid for and clearly needed. I routinely spend $300 to $500 to get my hair done correctly every couple months, so if my hair or scalp required an extra clarifying wash or a specific treatment to achieve a flawless finish, I would have happily approved the additional charge. A truly professional stylist checks the scalp, assesses what the hair actually needs, and communicates that openly with the client rather than rushing through the appointment. While I was still in her chair, she simply assured me that my hair looked good. However, after leaving the salon and taking a video in my car to send to my husband, I saw the true state of my hair in the daylight. My roots were completely unpressed and puffy, and my scalp was still noticeably dirty, with visible debris flaking off. I immediately walked right back into the salon to address it, but Keely had already rushed out and was gone. Because the salon manager had also left for the day, a general store manager had to take down all of my information. Resolving this required an immense amount of time and effort. I live an hour away from this salon, meaning I had to drive a total of four hours over two consecutive days just to deal with this situation. When I returned the next day, a senior stylist who has been doing hair for many years kindly looked at my scalp and completely validated me, confirming that it was flat-out dirty, not product buildup. When the salon manager finally arrived, they unfortunately tried to excuse the service by claiming it was just product buildup, but they did ultimately issue a refund for the $120 service fee. However, the salon kept the $20 tip I had paid upfront before I was able to see my hair in proper lighting. Keeping a tip for a rushed, incomplete add-on service is entirely backward. Keely Shrake clearly lacks the proper training, skill set, or care required to handle 4C hair textures. If you are looking for quality natural hair care at this location, save your time and money. While I have never personally been to Melissa, she comes highly recommended by others and actually shares the same hair type, making her a much safer bet if you are wanting to try textured styling at this salon.

  I always love coming here. It's always nice and quiet (even when it's busy) The environment is always just calm with no bright lights. That alone makes me love this place. Anyways my stylist was Lilli ( Lili?) First time seeing her. I was very happy! She nailed my hair color. I needed it back to my original color based on my roots only. My hair has bleach in it, faded fuscia color and she did it. It is darker than my original color BUT when it fades a little....it's going to be perfect!!!!! I got a hair cut too. She was very very knowledgeable right off the bat. She really wanted to hear about what I wanted with my hair. She looks so incredibly young, but she's knowledgeable like she's been here 20 years! Haha. She's a pro. She's very genuine, very sweet and ALWAYS made sure I was comfortable and if I needed anything. OH AND the receptionist lady....Idk her name dresses in black, long nails, and young. I LOVE HER!! she is the best and so genuine too! She was so excited when I had gotten my fuscia hair months ago. She was so funny too!!! Someone you just want to be around. Ok that's all. I love penneys. Mallory Clark

  after me and my wife have been going here for years, YESTERDAY, my wife was treated so rudely by the stylist and cashier staff. WE will never go back. They even spoke to 2 other customers the EXACT same way. Really sad as we enjoyed going there. Good thing there are OTHER options in the Duluth area. Bye Bye JCPenny.

  I just got home with my 14 year old son who had a haircut with Sahara. He had a very specific style he asked for and stated he wanted to keep the sides and back longer, a low taper fade. She started buzzing the sides and back and now has longer hair on the top, nothing at all even close to what he wanted. He told her this and she said she likes it better the way she did it and wouldn't listen to him. I am sorry but it's not up to the person cutting the hair. Very disappointed and have a kid who hates his hair now.
