  Had another great experience with Diaspora Salon. I’m really particular about who touches my hair, this stems from childhood and previously only wearing my hair straight. When I went natural I was managing my hair on my own and the reality is, I kind of knew what I was doing but not really. I have a tight curl pattern (4b) and really didn’t know what products to use and how to keep it healthy. Yasmine is my main stylist but I’ve had some good experiences with Leah and Ashley too. My main thing is I want my coils to pop and stay hydrated. And that is what I get every time. I look forward to my appointments because I really do feel like I get pampered and can relax from a stressful work day or work week. The vibes are always great and just welcoming all around. There is nothing better than being around black people who love black people.

  I decided to add a before cut and after cut picture so you could see how horrendous the cut was. The stylist would have cut even more off had I not stopped her. She was supposed to shape my natural hair— she scalped me. 😂 And charged $300 to do so. The problems with too many black, natural hair, salons is this: 1. It took 4 hours to produce this masterpiece 2. They don’t respect natural black hair 3. They are product heavy 4. They are still trying to mimic the a 3c curl pattern. THEY DON’T RESPECT BLACK HAIR! Anytime you have to wash my hair within one inch of its life. Put in conditioner and put a cap on it, set me under a dryer for 30 minutes. Rewash it. Then load it up with product. Put me back under a super hot dryer for 30 more minutes. All this to achieve my “natural” “curl” pattern. You are not respecting my natural pattern. Because there is nothing natural about the process. CRUNCHY curls are NOT natural 🤦🏽‍♀️ BTW, I don’t have curls. I have kinks. The picture on the left IS my natural hair. These salons are trying to make us 4c girls have 3c hair and the only way to do it is to cut our hair super short —without our permission, load it up with product and sit us under a dryer to try to make it look like we have “good hair.” I LOVE MY KINKS. You don’t love my kinks! And that’s the problem. When this woman finished butchering my hair— it was crunchy. It was ugly. It was unflattering. I washed it out as soon as I got home. What is the difference between what she did and sitting under a hot comb holding your ear as the comb sizzles through your hair? If it rains the hair reverts. If I shower the hair reverts. When I sleep— the hair reverts. If the hair reverts then it is not natural— it is manipulated with product and heat. I stayed away from black salons for 10 years. Because no one hates black hair more than black people. And that’s is the truth. And that is a pitiful shame. I am waiting for a black salon where the pic on the left is the norm. Beautiful, healthy, kinky, hair that needs to be shaped, conditioned, and you walk out with it feeling soft and fluffy and not stiff like a bag of onions. Diaspora is not a high end salon. It is a black salon that has been decorated nicely. But still practices the bad behavior of frying our hair and loading it with product — all while charging a fortune and taking a half day. True review with no sugar on top. Oh and they get these bad reviews and blame the person writing them rather then take them to heart and at least try to do a better job. Every bad review they get their friends to write 10-15 good ones to offset it. They have a lot of bad reviews that they just sweep under the rug. The picture on the right was me right after I left the salon. If you think that is a good hair cut by all means go pay your $300. 😳

  I was so excited to get my hair done. I chose the curly cut, with a curl pattern assessment and education. It is almost service that costs almost $300. The curly cut is supposed to shape your hair and trim the ends. I got Leah. Leah is lovely. The salon is lovely. The cut was exceedingly bad. I had longish hair when blown out it is a very big fro. I cannot even braid or twist my hair in the back or on the sides now. Years of growth… gone. I am only writing this review to say please be aware. Someone else might have been in tears. I am not overly concerned with length— black hair like mine grows toward the sun not the ground. I just wanted my hair shaped. A drastic cut was not what I asked for. Even if I had, it has to be a cut that fits your face and can be worked with— this was a big chop. And this is why I’d shied away from salons for black hair many black stylists do not know how to cut hair… in a style. They only know how to cut hair off. And many are trying to give you their style. Leah’s hair is longer on top and sort of shaved sides and back. Guess what shape my hair is now. My hair in the end looked like someone put a bowl on it and cut around the bowl. I never give bad reviews— but this might save someone. I have to go the rest of the summer like this. I can’t even get my hair in a ponytail. And I believe Leah would have kept cutting had I not commented the cut was starting to look like a big chop. I did a big chop 10 years ago. I have been natural for 10 years. Also, part of my treatment was to detox my hair to get rid of build up. And then she turned around and put a ton of product on my hair and set me under the dryer reversing the detox. This is not to bring out my curl pattern. This is to give me the illusion of a curl pattern I do not have. I got home, got laughed at, folks looked at me in my building with shocked expressions—like what did you do. No compliments. I washed my hair. And hopefully washed this bad experience away. I am too embarrassed to post a photo. I spent over 400 on cut and products. I am beyond disappointed. ☹️ And I am so sorry the salon is not herding all the bad reviews. Please— it’s not just hair. This is someone’s life. To ruin someone’s appearance so carelessly is not something they should take lightly. But apparently… they are.

  Ashley, please forgive my delay in writing this review! I had my first appointment at Diaspora Salon with Ashley on May 27, 2026, where I received a Curly Cut and color service. From the moment I walked through the door, I was impressed. The salon is absolutely stunning...beautifully designed, impeccably maintained, and welcoming. The atmosphere was exceptional, from the wonderful fragrance throughout the salon to the thoughtfully selected background music that created a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Ashley was personable, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable. She took the time to understand my hair goals and delivered results that exceeded my expectations. The aromatherapy-infused towels were such a luxurious touch that I nearly drifted off to sleep! I absolutely love my new cut, and the color elevated the entire look. I also had the pleasure of meeting Leah, whose warm, outgoing personality and great sense of humor made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, this was an outstanding salon experience from start to finish. I highly recommend Diaspora Salon and will definitely be returning. 🤗
