In late January, I needed a cut badly, because I had gnarly split ends. I get a blowout and sometimes a silk press when I get my haircut, because many stylists see hair like mine and panic (3c/4a). I had a semi-bad experience last time at my usual place (stylist brute-forced her tools through my hair after she made it a tangled mess) so I decided to give this place a try again. I was last here in August, and Mariah braided my hair into basic cornrows before a long vacation. I enjoyed the braids, and she told me to return to get a press. The problem is that Mariah had a baby last fall, so I wasn't able to book with her. In fact, January was my second attempt to book with her since September without success. I was able to get in to see Starr. Note that I have been managing my hair on my own forever. I have had between midback or shoulder length hair my entire life, and my goals are retaining length but having healthy hair. I made sure I washed and detangled my hair before arrival, because I know how people look at hair like mine and assume it is not detangled. So just about the first thing I'm told when I take my hair down in front of Starr is there will now be an extra detangling fee. I did not like this, because she had barely even touched my hair. Imagine her surprise when she took a comb to it, and it slid through like butter. At that point, she said no detangling fee would be necessary... Because as I said, I've been at this hair for a long time and my hair was tangle free when I walked in. Anyway... The wash was great: Starr can wash my type of hair without making it into a tangled mess: a good sign. The blowout was thorough and efficient: she used a dryer with a comb attachment and didnt put me under the hooded dryer. Ngl this was one of the best blowouts I've ever had tbh. If I weren't there to get a press and cut I could have stopped there and gone home happy. The problem is I did not. Now the cut: I ended up losing 1.5 inches. Starr first recommended 2, which seemed like a lot to me. So 1.5 was a compromise: I said I'd come back in 8 weeks or less and get another half inch trim. The press was not great: it was a bit greasy, and it reminded me of the presses I got when I was a kid with a hot comb in an elderly woman's home. But I was willing to look past this, because I know after a few days, it becomes less greasy. The style I did not like at all, very church lady, but I knew I was going to wear it pulled back daily anyway. I paid, tipped well, and left. She also told me Mariah would be back soon.
Fast forward to late February, I decided to return to get the other half inch trimmed, booked with Mariah. Called to confirm the day before and she was apparently still on leave. Annoyed, I canceled and said I'd reschedule. And I did, to later in March with Starr. I figured, what do I have to lose? At least she can wash well and do a great blowout. I also scheduled the half inch cut. But because I did not like her press, I requested twists for the style. I show up, hair detangled per usual. Starr says I need to cut 2 inches... And this is where I should have either walked out or stood firm on my half inch. We discussed, and I settled on "let's just blow it out and see." Starr does another amazing wash and blow out. I am feeling more confident. She cuts half an inch and shows me, and I decide to trust her. But after she is done cutting, I can clearly see I have lost more than half an inch: probably 1.5 inches, and my hair is now a bob I didn't ask for. There is nothing I can do now. I just hope it is long enough to pull into a ponytail. Starr says she cut it at such an angle that I can do so... Like I said, nothing I can do now. For the style, imo Starr is not good at the flat twists: they look and feel inverted as she is doing them and after she is done. I have never had that much product used on flat twists either, but it will do for a week. I pay, tip well, leave. Will I return? For a wash and blowout, yes, 5 stars. For cuts or a press, probably not, 2-3 stars. 3.5 is my compromise, rounding up to this 4.
