Do not go here for color. I looked at other reviews before posting this because I wanted to make sure this wasn’t just a “me” issue, but unfortunately, it seems that the lack of professionalism from some of the colorists is a recurring concern.
I booked with Talia because I assumed that a reasonably experienced colorist would be able to handle a simple single-process color. From the beginning of the consultation her demeanor felt dismissive. Once I began explaining my hair history her attitude got increasingly worse. As soon as I mentioned that I had previously colored my hair myself, she started making faces behind me and seemed immediately uninterested in working with me. She interrupted me with a condescending “mkayyyy,” and I noticed other colorists looking over and expressing similar judgment. I came in for a color service, not to be shamed or disrespected by someone I was paying. Throughout the consultation, she made several statements that seemed to contradict each other, while still speaking to me as if I was unable to comprehend both what I was asking for and what she was saying. When I asked questions, she would roll her eyes. The overall interaction felt unnecessarily condescending, especially considering that I had booked a simple all over color, as opposed to a complicated correction which I knew was not needed. What concerned me most was that she repeatedly pushed me toward getting a balayage, despite the fact that I had booked a single process color and had shown her a picture of an all over chocolate brown which was my goal. She told me that I would need bleach, a balayage, multiple sessions, and a significant amount of time to reach my goal, which was again an all over chocolate brown. A balayage is also significantly more expensive than an all over color, but do with that what you will. For context, my hair was already about half a shade away from the color I wanted. I explained my previous color history clearly, and I knew that my goal was not unrealistic. It felt less like she was trying to help me reach my desired result and more like she was trying to steer me toward a service, or a series of services, that would take more time… and time is money. When I tried to discuss other options, she only offered choices that either moved me farther from my goal or involved the balayage she had been pushing, which she did not even have time to do that day. She would then follow up by saying, “I know it’s disappointing,” even though the disappointment came from the fact that she was not offering realistic options that aligned with what I had booked or shown her. The entire experience felt like I was being judged or punished for having colored my hair at home. Of course, I, along with most other people who color their own hair, understand that at home color is not the same quality as salon color, but I also know that many people go to professionals for color after coloring their own hair and they do not have this type of experience. I also find it hard to believe that a colorist has never colored their own hair at home with poor quality products at least once in their lifetime. I did not end up getting anything done with her, and as I was leaving, she seemed happier than she had been during the consultation and added a little, “maybe don’t color your hair at home,” which felt unnecessary and unprofessional in my opinion. I went to Tricoci because I wanted a slight change, was unsure how to achieve it myself, and thought it would be safer to have it done at a salon. I knew it was not complex, so I thought they would be able to do it. I found another salon in Gold Coast that had no issue understanding or achieving my goal in one appointment, and were significantly more professional. The other colorist even told me that what I wanted was very possible and actually a really simple process. My concern is that someone with little to no background knowledge, could have easily been persuaded into spending an unnecessary amount time and money in order to reach a rather simple goal.

I’ve been getting my hair lightened for years and have always struggled to find someone who truly gets it… until Sara at Mario Tricoci in downtown Chicago. When I say she nails my hair every single time, I mean it- no notes, just perfection. She is genuinely masterful at what she does.
I’ve been seeing her for a few years now, and the consistency, the attention to detail, the way she just knows what will look good- it’s unmatched. I trust her completely, which is something I’ve never been able to say before.
I’m actually moving to Florida next month, and I’m not even kidding when I say I will 100% be flying back to Chicago just to see her. I simply cannot (and will not) risk anyone else touching my hair.
If you’re even thinking about booking with Sara, do it. Your hair will thank you. And I thank you, Sara!!!!🫶
