I recently received a Korean perm from Megan Zimick at this salon. I brought very specific inspiration photos focused on volume, structural lift, and flipped ends, and I confirmed multiple times that this look was achievable.
After following all aftercare instructions (not getting hair wet at all) and allowing the perm to fully dry and settle, the result did not resemble the inspiration in terms of volume or shape. My ends remained straight and the overall look reads as loose beachy texture rather than the blowout-style shape I requested.
I then, messaged Megan on Instagram. And when I told her about how the perm didn’t come close to what we discussed, Megan confirmed that the rods used were expected to produce this loose wave pattern…
That’s where my confusion comes in; because I had asked more than once during the appointment whether I would have volume and flip at the ends, and I was reassured that I would. And then to find out that she chose rods that give a beach wave with straight ends and no volume was actually an expected result?… I won’t make any assumptions, but I find it odd that she chose rods that went directly against the very specific inspo photos. (I attached all messages and my inspo pics, and my hair on day 3 & day 5 post perm.)
I sent her the photos of my original inspiration that she saw in the salon, with photos of my own hair, for comparison, I complimented her, and apologized and ask if there was a possibility for a partial refund. The only solution offered was to wait and pay for an even more expensive perm rather than discuss a refund for the original service, which was $300 for the perm. The solution was to offer me a more expensive perm to get the results I wanted for $350-$450… On top of what I already paid. I would have been happy paying $450 the first time if it got me the result's I wanted.
Also, even though this is a negative review, I do find that this stylist did an excellent job on my previous hair color and cut. I am just disappointed that there was no accountability taken when I tried to discuss this privately, rather than going to the manager/owner of the salon. I really enjoyed her energy and conversation, so I was extremely surprised by this gaslighting-like behavior.
I understand that results can vary, but clearer expectation-setting would have been appreciated if this outcome was likely.
I was never warned that the perm might not take beforehand. And that doesn’t even seem to be what the issue is. It was the choice of rods I guess…
I would have been satisfied if I had at least some flips at the end of my hair, if volume was not attainable. But it turns out that the rods chosen, not by me, were never intended to give volume.
I am also disappointed because I already had natural texture and wave in my hair, and could have easily achieved these results by using curl cream and a diffuser for beach waves instead of spending so much money. I am not a picky person, nor do I ever complain about hair services.
She put in a lot of hard work, but I found the lack of any real solution or accountability, to drive me to the point of making this review. I do not wish to hurt this salon’s business. I don’t think I’ve written a bad review in my entire life.
