Yesterday, 11.11.25, we entered the store around 3pm to get my 94 year old, Korean War vet grandfather a hair cut, on veterans day. We weren't aware that Great Clips had a promotion for Veterans, he just really needed one and he doesn't get out much. Once we got his name on the list, (we were behind a WWII vet that was 100 years old!!) we were waiting his turn to get him in the chair, we witness; a veteran walk in the door, ask for her vet coupon, witness her hand over her ID, team member glanced at the ID, hand over a coupon and walk out. I think it is important to note, the team member didn't copy the id, or enter it in the system. We asked the women at the desk, what was that. She said, oh they get a free hair cut...not elaborating or saying, oh is he a vet? (My grandfather had a Korean War vet shirt and hat on, so clearly a veteran) We then asked, ok, can our vet get that. She simply said, I need his ID. He doesn't have one, as he was in and out, long before they gave him a military ID. Personally, as a business owner, in 2025, I UNDERSTAND, we need to have rules!! People take advantage of things, but at the same time, I can only imagine that my grandfather is EXACTLY who Great Clips intended this program benefit. She didn't give him a coupon, or allow him to have the free haircut. She kept saying, I need his ID, it's not my rules, it's corporate, and it was clear she wasn't going to budge. Again, it didn't appear that she had to enter the ID anywhere, it felt like she was giving us a hard time just to give us a hard time. We didn't want to make a scene, we just said ok. She COULD HAVE been human and said, let me check, I'll get back to you... or clearly he is a veteran, I'll make an exception, but next time please bring something that would show ... we had copies of his Miliary photos, on our phones from his time in Korea. Another patron, who was standing paying while this conversation was taking place, took his money out of his wallet and said I want to pay for his hair cut, and out he walked out the door. To be clear, we didn't walk into the store thinking this was going to be a free hair cut, we had fully intended to pay for it. To that stranger that paid for it, THANK YOU! so incredibly kind, and I hope the universe repays you for that act. It was more the principle. It was veterans day, he is a 94 year old man that needed help to get in and out of the chair, did you really think we were lying? You could have shown more empathy towards him. She was the women that ended up giving him the haircut... and she did a nice job! She took her time and was patient with him, complimented his hair, did a nice job trimming up the neck, and by the ears, allowed me to sit next to him, she gave all the kids lollypops. It ended on a high note. I guess my hope for this review is to get to management. I'm not sure what your policy is on this Veterans Day promotion, but maybe give some grace to the team members that are left to enforce it, not everyone is going to have an ID. Allow them to use their own judgment, especially when it comes to WWII, Korean, and Vietnam vets. If they are wearing something that says vet, please take their word for it. It would have been a 5 star review if she would have honored the vet hair cut. The experience left me conflicted.
