I’ve had multiple extremely upsetting experiences at the Sephora, all involving the same employee whose behavior toward me has been rude, demeaning, and intimidating( this no longer should be a huge surprise at this location because all the reviews claim to have been treated the same way especially WOC which I am, again not surprised.)
On a previous visit, I absentmindedly placed a product into my personal bag with the full intention of paying. The moment I realized, I immediately brought it to the employee’s attention because I wanted to be honest and clear up the situation. I was transparent, cooperative, and calm. Instead of handling this professionally, the employee responded in a harsh and accusatory tone, saying, “Yeah, I don’t think it was an accident.” That comment was humiliating and made me feel immediately judged and targeted.
Since that moment, this employee’s behavior toward me has been relentless. She repeatedly talked about me over her walkie talkie, referring to me as “the Victoria Secret tote bag girl” (that’s the bag I was carrying lol) within earshot, as if I were some kind of known problem. She did this openly and without any discretion. I noticed every time. Because of this, I stopped carrying that bag entirely to avoid suspicion, yet the harassment continued anyway.
On multiple visits, she followed me aggressively through every single aisle I went down. No matter where I moved, she stayed close behind, watching my hands and my bag the entire time. I was unable to browse or shop normally and felt constantly monitored. I am a minor with high functioning anxiety, and this behavior severely heightened my anxiety and left me feeling shaken, embarrassed, and distressed. (Mind you I’ve bought many products from this Sephora in the past?!?)
What made this treatment even more disturbing was that I did not see her follow or monitor white customers who were also shopping with bags. The way I was singled out felt like racial profiling rather than legitimate customer service.
To make matters worse, she told me, “You are welcome to shop online now,” which strongly implied that I was no longer welcome in the store. This was said despite the fact that I never stole anything, was never warned, and was never informed of any official restriction. Being spoken to this way was incredibly upsetting and inappropriate.
A single misunderstanding that was immediately corrected does not justify ongoing harassment, labeling, or surveillance of a customer. Sephora should be a place where customers feel respected and comfortable, not humiliated, intimidated, or profiled by an employee.
I sincerely hope management takes this seriously, because no customer, especially a minor, should be treated this way.
